.348 Winchester
You never know what you are going to run into when you go digging
I found a new in wrapper set of Hornady .348 Winchester dies and several boxes of new Silvertip ammo

Nice. I've still got two cases left plus 6 boxes I think ... and a couple hundred brass. I need to order some of those LBT 348 bullets from MBW now that they are back in action.

Re: .348 Winchester
I haven’t owned a rifle in this caliber for years. Many years.
But obviously I at one time planned to load for it.

Re: .348 Winchester
I am in the same boat. I was cleaning up my reloading area, recently, and found a new set of 348 dies, and probably 300 new pieces of brass, bullets too, I think. And I haven't owned a 348 in 6 or 7 years at least. I guess I need to put them in the classifieds, because I have more guns to shoot and load for than I will ever get around to, without getting another 348.

I have plenty of brass and bullets for my 348 and I don't know when I will shoot it next. I shot a 9 point with it in 2019 and decided to stop hunting with it and work up some cast bullets loads for it. I still have not done so. Too many other guns I am playing with now. I will get to it eventually.

The price of new brass is up there ... $1.76/each for Starline. Some pretty high asking prices up on GunBroker as well.Lastmohecken wrote: ↑Mon May 25, 2026 7:11 pm I am in the same boat. It's been years. I need to get out to that range on SR44 and sign up for a membership and do more shooting of everything.

Re: .348 Winchester
Over the years have managed to keep a couple of pre-war Model 71s and still reload for them with the last of my Kodiak 250s and discontinued
Hornady 200 gr Interloks. Even have a supply of Swift and Hawk 348 loaded cartridges. It is interesting to still hunt with a Model 71 in MT-WY or even Alaska .
Older Winchesters are made for older hunters who refuse to hang up their guns.
For serious Alaskan bush exploring, still retain a pre-war M71 in 450 Alaskan. It uses 400 gr FP Hawk or Kodiak jacketed bullets.
Have not and probably will not use cast 348 bullets as long as my jacketed bullets hold out, as I do not target shoot these rifles. Their accuracy and bullet strike impact location is already known.

Now that’s a sexy looking cartridge!
Maybe I can find an old beater 71.

Yes it is! Amongst the most "sexy-interesting-awe statement" cartridges Winchester ever made! At least when you look at the 71-348W purpose of being invented & story! I truly always thought so after learning of it! I still wish I had one, but this far down road won't pursue one. I have better choices for my use, but that dont change the facts still!

I had a Browning carbine some years ago.
The best fitting stock I’ve ever used.

Re: .348 Winchester
If I was to get one I know exactly what my first objective would be as far as reloads for my purpose? A 200gr Hawk, Barnes Original, or equivalent, according to best accuracy of course. A mild-mid range load for these mountain whitetails. A receiver sight & similar load would be outstanding for deer further than id ever get an opportunity around here, and these bullets at those speeds im sure would give more DRT kills than most any cartridge! Sure be exciting to try anyways!
Tom Parsons could've chose any rifle he wanted most likely to make those shots (shooting those coins in the air) while filming the movie "Winchester 73". Verifies again the excellent Shoulder & Shoot Accuracy of the Mod 71 in the field! The Mod 71 & 64 handle so much alike!

Re: .348 Winchester
Herb was an incredible trick shot. I always thought his choice for this use was very interesting.
Did he use full power ammunition? How loud must that have been to the cast and crew?

Re: .348 Winchester
Though t about it a lot myself! I've got a pic or a link to it stowed away somewhere, im sure taken just before one of the two shots ( I think two shots only taken, which he did hit? If otherwise id be curious to know?), and only really safety precautions I saw, was he was standing on a crate, only few feet behind Stewart. No doubt to assure he didn't shoot someone, and to get the muzzleblast above them, at least this my thoughts! Boy, Hollywood sure has changed! Baldwin incident!!!
But I know Persons had a Mod 64 30-30 also, a rifle i reckon he truly liked. Ive just always thought if it where me, I'd attempted this with the Mod 64, but this speaks a lot of the Mod 71 again! Maybe he hadn't acquired his Mod 64 yet? Idk, just always wondered? I saw a puc just few years ago in Sporting Classics Magazine, of his Mod 64 which had recently been sold at auction.
Ammo used? I dont have a clue, could've very well been a reduced load!

Re: .348 Winchester
I have a couple of 64s put away. They feel good but just not as solid as a good 71 Winchester.
Re: .348 Winchester
There's no denying the feel of the 86 & 92 Actions, nothing like em! I tried to possibly buy a friend's Rossi 92 in 45Colt a while back. Wow what a sweet rifle, so smooth. But I turned it down, just wasn't interested in that cartridge, but mainly just dont need it!
That loose action is what turned me away from a 94 years ago, after being used to a Marlin 336. But after I tried one, got one, I fell in love with em. I remember someone on here saying a long time ago, " Gotta love a rifle that when you lever the action the guts fall out" Lol
But the 94 action when its locked n ready to fire, is John Browning perfection!, all things considered!

When’s the last time I shot my 71…about 48 hours ago. 200 grain silver tips

Mic McPhearson and I were tearing up the side of the mountain with my 71 carbine this morning. Shoots great!
