Strange Nosler data- 44 mag 300gn jacketed

Post by mickbr »

Nosler data shows 17 grains 2400 and a 300 grain JHP for 1372fps from a pistol. . Alliants data has 19 grains for only 1088fps, almost 300 fps slower... I get different test barrels, bullet lengths etc but thats a crazy world of difference....

Also isnt H110 the same powder as W296? The below shows 20.5 grains of W296 getting 1311fps and then 20.5 grains of H110 down the page getting 1423fps... :?:

Lacking pressure testing equipment, I have struggled trying to understand these anomalies as well.

Could be poor/no editing as well.

A recent Handloader article on loading for 44 revolver and carbine clearly put carbine velocities in the revolver column.

The 110/296 disparity might be different lots, days, screen placement or combination thereof.

.
I have read that 2400 Powder has had Fairly major changes content over the years. Not sure if that's true.

Well I tested some 2400 behind the 300gn XTP today in the 20" rossi. I went to 17.7 grains. Had 18 ready but got rained out.

Velocities
1491fps
1488fps
1441fps
1447fps

Alliants max is 19 grains, with a shorter type of 300grain jacketed though. I might work up to that next time.

Ballistic gel tests shows it start to expand just under subsonic and full speed its gets about 68cal expansion.
