We had our monthly OAC collector gun show yesterday and a guy setup next to me with a bunch of old rifle scopes. Mostly small 3/4" like .22's came with, or 3/4" early scopes before they went to 1" scopes. He did also have a couple early 1" scopes like a Lyman Alaskan, and a Redfield 2.5x7x that were neat.
One scope jumped out at me as being unique, and I asked to look at it. It was marked Mossberg M4 4x Power, but the rings were marked "No.7 Patent pending". It was in nice shape, and had clear optics and fine crosshairs. At $60 I took a chance just because it was so unusual.
When I got home I looked in Stroebel's Old Scopes book and discovered it was listed as an "Model M74" meaning a M4 with No. 7 target mounts. Made from 1938-65, and seems not a lot got purchased from my never having seen these mounts before? The mounts have two wire rails on each mount that keep the scope crosshairs vertical, while letting the scope slide in the mounts under recoil. Designed for higher power rifles where recoil could break crosshairs if the scope didn't slide. Pretty neat little scope and mounts.
