When is the last time you fired your AR15?
For me, it’s been a couple of years or more!
So I took it out of the safe today and blew the dust out of it.(figuratively)
It was loaded, well lubed and the sights were exactly as I left them.
BUT I had to bring the front sight up a full revolution to get the zero right.
Word to the wise….Might want to check that zero once in a while.

About a year ago at the Sweetwater Rifle and Pistol Club when I still lived in Texas, but mine was in .450 Bushmaster. It sure was hog accurate.

Re: When is the last time you fired your AR15?
Hmm, probably at least 7 or 8 years since I shot mine.
I bit hard on the ARs, I have one set up as a battle carbine, one as a dedicated varmint rig, another as a 450 bushmaster and an AR10.
Bill my 450 is more than hog accurate, with just about any bullet powder combo I tried it was an easy 1.5" gun.
The last time it was shot I let a buddy shoot it. The shot broke, hot case ejected hitting my range bag and rolled in under his forearm. He has a 450 bushmaster case burn scar on his arm.
The 'platform ' is good but it is a soulless hunk of aluminum. Not to mention I really hate chasing brass!

I frankly don’t understand why I would lose zero. There’s nothing obvious. Windage stayed perfect. But elevation was off.
Re: When is the last time you fired your AR15?
I have several AR's in various caliber and setups. Some scoped, some red dots, some iron sighted. I shoot one or more of them on almost a weekly basis. More than I shoot leverguns. I know, shame on me!
I recently added a FRT to the mix, ooooh boy, my ammo consumption just went way up!

Re: When is the last time you fired your AR15?
Last summer when I taught a beginner class at a nearby range. I have two Wilson Combat ARs, a rifle and pistol, a Frankengun that refuses to die, and a couple of receivers that I still need to build up. Honestly, my Winchester 94 30-30 or Wrangler .44 Magnum get shot and carried around way more than any of my battle rifles. You're right though Scott, I need to break them out and shoot them. Might need them sooner rather than later.

Re: When is the last time you fired your AR15?
I shoot leverguns weekly but you know that when you buy one of these black guns it makes sense that you would occasionally make sure to see that they shoot to the sights.
Re: When is the last time you fired your AR15?
I shoot my ccw pistol, 22 LR pistol, 22 LR rifles, leverguns, and AR's of various flavors all about equally, and all every 7-14 days.
Trying to re-do my primary AR right now (new upper with RifleSpeed manually adjustable gas on a Daniel Defense barrel), and it's the first one in years I've had trouble getting gassed right for perfect feeding.
So.....I went out and shot a bunch of 38 Special loads from one of my Marlin 1894's at the 100 yard 8" gong for reassurange that I can still make a gun work...

Re: When is the last time you fired your AR15?
I bought my one and only AR back when Obummer was running his mouth off about banning them. I bring it out a couple times a year and shoot 20 or 30 rounds, clean it up and put it back in the safe. I never remember which loads I have it zeroed for. I should write it down and tape it to the stock.
I am with Gunny thought. They are a soul-less hunk of aluminum.

P.s. I like and shoot my Ruger Mini 14 Ranch a lot more.

Re: When is the last time you fired your AR15?
Been so many years I can't even make an accurate guess? I know it was pre-pandemic, and right after I bought it. Maybe has 20 rds. through it, and then it got put in the back of the safe and forgotten about. I only bought it because Cabelas had Andersons on sale for $399, and figured I should own one at that price.

Checking your zero periodically on a defensive weapon is always a good idea!
Fortunately, between Y2K and I, we practice with "modern sporting rifles" about once a month.

Scott, I am still puzzling over an untouched rifle, previously zeroed, shooting high. Do you have a theory yet?

Re: When is the last time you fired your AR15?
Scoped? Change of ammo. Wait, you said it was still loaded, but... was it same ammo you last zero'd it with? Position of the sun, vision prescription, storage positioning. Humidity, air pressure, wind direction, speed... any number of factors can affect how a rifle shoots from one day to the next.

I refused modify mine, it was a gift from the kids. So I had to relocate it out of state.

Re: When is the last time you fired your AR15?
How was it stored, and how long did it stay in that position. Think about it, even steel bends a bit if it is left in the same position long enough. You can see that by looking at photos of the Golden Gate Bridge from it's construction until today. Gravity always wins.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2026 1:34 pm I frankly don’t understand why I would lose zero. There’s nothing obvious. Windage stayed perfect. But elevation was off.

I'm thinking about it. Which did you go with? I'm favoring the ARC-Fire.

Re: When is the last time you fired your AR15?
I got the Partisan Disruptor. It's a true drop in with no modification to the gun. Mine would function with 223 ammo with a standard carbine buffer and spring, but with 5.56 ammo it would cycle too fast and not reset the trigger. They recommend at least a H2 buffer, but a H3 buffer is best, and you may need an extra power buffer spring to really get it shooting smooth.Rimfire McNutjob wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2026 9:12 pmI'm thinking about it. 10 days ago, one shot to vanish an itinerant quail eater, 268 yards. $400 Anderson with $700 worth of sights, optic and trigger
The last time I had an unexpected elevation error with AR irons, it was because I'd inadvertently flipped my aperture down. I somehow remember to check the elevation slide on my 336 Texan, but lever actions are natural to me while Stoner's Speckled Pup is not.

About a week or so ago. I shot a 30 rd mag in a pistol bay, then went to the 200 yard bay and shot the steel gongs. I’m trying to do more regular rifle and combat shotgun practice this year.

It’s a 20 inch Colt AR15 Government Carbine. Standard A2 iron sights. No modifications whatsoever. Stored standing butt down in a safe.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2026 7:37 pm Scott, I am still puzzling over an untouched rifle, previously zeroed, shooting high. Do you have a theory yet?
Maybe I see the sights differently than I used to?
