New to Me Winchester

While at work, an older gentlemen came by with several leverguns to test fire. He is taking them to the Gillete gun show. He had an orginal trapper model 1895 30-06 that was in excellent shape. I shot it and offered to buy it. He went home to check the price. His good friend that buys alot from him scooped it up for $1800. He broke the news to me and offered me the 30-30 for a great price. I bought it! It's a 1901 Winchester 1894 30WCF with a 26" octagon barrel. It appears all original, screws are all good. Looks like one may have been replaced. Not a speck of rust! The bore looks new. The action has very little wear. I took an old box of corelokts and shot it. At 50 yards my first group measured .87". Then I fired 3 quick shots and they were 2.25". Not bad for a 125 year old rifle. I may try to get an elk with it next season! I'm no collector or expert so I do not know it's value.

Wow, congratulations on the ultimate Mod 94 30-30, an early one with 26" Oct Barrel, and sounds like unusually good condition, Mod 94's dont come any better! In your hands now and makes meat, especially elk meat= Priceless!

Thanks. Like I said...I don't know alot about old Winchesters. Just that I really liked it. The guy told me his brother bought it in a Montana pawn shop several years back. His brother passed a few years ago so he's selling off over 140 guns! This one still had the pawn shops hang tag on it which I assume means he never shot it. I'm glad because his brother was known to load very hot loads...even blowing up a few barrels!

Yes, Thankful for that! I started to comment against hot loads but I figured you knew that already, which now its obvious yes you do! Idk $ value, but in that shape I'd bet its ^$. But no matter, sounds like its found a good retirement home, and Red Letter Days ahead for you both! Hope see Elk pics this fall, or any venison!

I got it for a grand......A friend told me that was a great deal.
I've got 125 yrs of use to catch up on it!

I have an 1898 model 94, just like that one, as best I can tell. It's a pretty good shooter, but most of the bluing is gone. I also had to replace the magazine spring with a new one from Brownell's before it became reliable. But it's very reliable now, and I never hunted with it much, but killed a doe on the run with it, crossing a narrow field of mine a few years ago.
