Old factory 348 ammo, shoot em,keep em ,or??

Post by big bear »

I just uncovered a bag of 348 ammo behind some books on a book case while looking for an old book I thought I had. If you are old you understand the situation. I have no idea how they got there. The bag had a note, (not in my handwriting) "348 WCF 19 Winchester,1 RP 200 grain $45". Given the price these must have been bought 4-5 years ago. Oh yeah, I found the book, 30 year old Gun Digest with an article about the excellent ergonomics of the Winchester 71.

The Winchester are 9 "Super Speed" and 9 are "Super X". I believe the Super Speed is the older designation. The bullets are NOT SILVER TIPS.

I am a Win 71 nut of the first order ( I have 7 of them and am seriously thinking of buying another one, a long tang as I don't have a long tang 71). This is to clarify I have laid back plenty of ammo, brass and bullets so I don't need the brass. I try and take a 71 to the range every time I go and shoot at least 20rds.

So shoot em, keep em ,or?????

And while I have your attention I would love the thoughts of other 71 aficionados about what to do with my unfired in the box Browning High Grade 71s, rifle & carbine. Shoot em,keep em,or????? . By the way I have regretted selling every 71 I have ever sold. My sons have no use for my "old levers"

If you don't own a 71 none of these questions will make much sense to you, so feel free to just ignore and scroll on by. By the way this forum is where I caught 71 itis in 2007, so you have been warned!

I am a firm believer of shooting all my guns. I have no safe queens. But you have other 71s to shoot so why bother with shooting the Brownings. They are not going to shoot any different.

I shot old Super Speed ammo in my 71 and the necks all split.

Shoot it. Might be interesting to chrono the different versions.

I'd shoot it up. I'd also take the high grade 71's and shoot them. You can't take the guns or the money with you when you check out. Better be right with the Lord though when that time comes.

Kids don't want leverguns, find a young person that does and make a few gifts.

I caught the levergun bug when I was 18, 42 now, and though I went through a small tactical phase, I have come full circle. So, have hope, that not all young folks aren't interested in leverguns.

Here I am shooting a friends 50-110, man that thing is sweet.
