Keith 44 spl load carbine velocity

Post by Malamute »

Ive been unable to find any info on what the old Keith 44 spl load of 17 grs 2400 with 429421 Lyman bullet load does for velocity in a 20" carbine barrel. Anyone have any chronograph or quickload data?

I have a project in mind, Im wondering what that load will do in a carbine. The info for pistol length barrels is easy to find, but so far nothing on carbine length barrels.

I once clocked it from a 16" R92, it's been a while but I recall it was running around 1450 fps.

I have 240gn Jacketed in 44 special but not cast. 245 cast would run a little faster of course.

20" barrel 1892 Rossi, WLP and Starline brass, 240gn XTP

2400 Powder
3 shot groups, rough averages below

14 grains 1150fps
16 grains 1330fps
16.5 grains 1370fps
18 grains 1500fps
I guesstimate a 17 grain load with the 240gnXTP would be about 1400fps and for cast bullets another 100fps?

Just edited to say I'm heading to the range this Sunday. I dont have Kieth's bullet, but can Chrony a 240 grain Hitek coated hardcast with 17 grains loaded if thats useful to you?

Thanks for the information, and yes, it would be helpful to have the velocity of the load you mentioned. Should be close enough to have a reasonable idea.

Ok I will load a few up and see how they go. Anyone want any other levels tested on the day let me know. I take along my Lee Hand press and load at the bench. Probably will have the following with me.

200 and 240gn xtp
200 grain Speer Gold dots.
200 and 240gn hardcast hitek
44special and 44 mag brass.
2400 powder and Unique.

Gun is a Rossi 1892 20". Prochrono Chronograph

1492fps... and I estimated 1500, sometimes armchair math works out :D
