New to Arkansas….need a good 45 Colt load for Rossi

Post by Echo154 »

Me and the boss…..er ah Mrs. Move into North Central Arkansas a few months back….just found my trail cams caught some feral hogs milling about…..guess I’ll start carrying my mountain Gun for nightly walks instead of a 9mm. They are considered invasive and can be taken year round. Looking for a good round for my R92 45 Colt..16” for popping them?

They are not bullet proof. Any .45 Colt load should do just fine.
I've killed them with nearly every caliber i have (though my favorite is 00 buck)

A 6.5 Grendel or .300 Blackout are my most common.

Kill them all!

Plan to….I have only had the R92 45 a few months and not had a lot of time to try loads yet…moving, broke ankle…..yeah lots of rocks and steep hills here! Ive got a 92 20” in 44 mag but like the shorter barrel….my land is just recovering from logging and lots of brush…gonna do some brush hogging……to clear (pun intended) in the spring to get it more deer friendly…..leaving all the oak, hickory, walnut etc just clearing cedar and scrub. Only got about 7 acres but 36 acres of public land next door and several thousand acres that Forrest Wood owned and is kept for cattle and wild life…no hunting ….Mark Twain national Forrest just over the hill….so I imagine lots of hogs! By the By….i love your location😉

We had an F4 tornado come through about 3 years ago. It left a half-mile wide strip of downed trees.
The deer love the chaos that grew out of it, but the hogs stayed away for almost a whole year. They are back in full force now. I've been getting good use out of my thermal scope.

Yeah…thermal is above my pay grade…..shorter ranges here(very hilly and thick brush. Ive got a set of Bravo 7s to find em then I’ll have to light em up.

Welcome to Arkansas, Echo! I don't have a Rossi in 45 Colt, but my Winchester 94 likes Hornady 250 grin XTPs and the Ruger only load of H110. If it don't
like that try using IMR 4227.

I use 250 gr. of anything on critters, and nothing has complained yet. I had Steve put a Red dot mount on it when he worked it over, as most of my problems are after dark. There is a guy who makes a rail mount for the Rossis that works great if you have an older one.

I have shot a few hogs (3) with a Winchester 92 in 45 Colt. The load was 16.5 gr, 2400 with a 250 gr. Hornady XTP. One shot each, through and through penetration. I limited the powder charge to 16.5 because I also shoot a Colt SA and the Lyman manual lists that as a max load for the Colt. If you don't have that limitation you could go higher. The velocity out of my 24" bbl. is 1640 fps; yours would be less out a 16" bbl. so you might need to increase the powder charge to achieve the same results.
