Winchester 9422

Post by Reno1892 »

I just bought my 2nd lever gun, a Winchester 9422M. It's an XTR model and from the two serial number lists I found, it was made in either 1977 or '78. I've read (after I bought it of course) that the XTR models had a deeper blued finish, upgraded wood and checkering. The finish is still beautiful and although I've seen better, the wood has some nice figuring. I've also never seen a tighter, nicer stock to receiver fit, but there's no checkering.

I understand the XTR models came out in '77. Is it possible the early models didn't have checkering, or is it more likely that the stock has been replaced? If it's the latter, it was done by someone with exceptional skill. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

I have two model 9422s, one in .22lr and the other in .22 mag. They both have beautiful, perfectly executed checkering. The .22lr has a nicely figured walnut stock, the mag has a laminated stock in green and gray. I bought both in the late 80s and the serial number of the mag indicates it was made in 1987.

Yes it is possible. I don't recall for sure how long. IIRC, the first two years of the XTR were not checkered. Congrats! I prefer the uncheckered ones myself.

Well, I've learned a lot over the last 24 hours, mostly from other forums. From what I gather, it seems the first year the XTR came out in '78, was the only year it wasn't checkered. So mine was probably made in early '78 as they switched from a steel magazine tube (like mine) to brass also in '78.

I was initially going to mount a scope, but now I'm thinking about a peep sight, but I'd rather not drill and tap the tang. Does anyone know of a peep sight that can be mounted in the receiver dovetail?

Back when it was easy to import a firearm from the USA to the UK I got a 9422M with the checkered stock, it was incredibly accurate at 200yds with open sights but stupidly let it go, I did buy another but it was nowhere near as accurate. I also had a 9422 in LR that was a very early one and had been abused quite badly and was rusty when I bought it but it never let me down.

The first rifle I purchased for my wife was a 9422 LR. I think it was for Christmas 1994. It has very nice case color, great checkering and is a lot of fun to shoot. Nice and light and easy for my wife to handle. I'll have to check to see if I can find out when it was made. I know it had been in the store many years before I bought it.

The pics make the wood look worse than it is, found it in a local shop for $850. It has a nice 3.25lb trigger, so I'm happy with it.

Saw an excellent condition 22 WMR XTR on gunbroker couple months ago . $699 .. I studied it and studied it , put it in my watch list went back hour or so later to buy it GONE . Best deal Ive seen on one in many years.

I should have bought one years ago but unfortunately didnt.

Is this what you want ?

Yes, I was looking at those and the Williams sights. I Initially didn't want to drill the tang thinking its value might take a hit, but since it's really not a collector and the previous owner drilled the stock for the swivel stud, I've decided to buy a tang peep sight.

Also I'm curious about the 3.25 trigger, does anyone know if that's what they usually came with, or is it more likely that its had some work done?

Welcome aboard Reno! You bought a nice one. I love my 9422 and my 9422M. They shoot really good.
I bought one of those Williams Peeps that fits on the scope mount of my 9422M. It shot too high IIRC, so I took it off. I didn't want to change the front sight.
