Christmas in January

Post by Griff »

After yesterday's cowboy match I swung by the local gunsmith that was modifying my 1851s to pick 'em up. He had 3 ready, but was still working on the 4th... something about the dimensions being wrong and using the wrong metal...

Anyway, 3 2nd Gen Colt 1851s freshly modified with Manhattan Gates and Ruger plungers & coil springs to replace the flat Colt hand springs.

Excellent work by Boomstick Arms in Leonard, TX, and I'm looking forward to competing with 'em! Tell 'm Griff sent ya. But... please don't take him a Paterson to work on... He told after fixing mine he didn't ever want to see another!

From three sides.

The top & bottom photos show how the hammer needs to be narrowed to clear the gate and strike the cap. There are other ways to accomplish the same result, but I happen to like this one the best. Some guys install a bit of drill shank right at the bottom front of the hammer slot and enlarge the factory groove in the hammer to keep spent caps from following the hammer back as you cock it, and falling into the action. (It may look like there's an interference issue between the hammer and the gate in photo #3, but it was taken at a slight angle, there's equal clearance on both side of the reconfigured hammer).
