Fun at the range
Took a few Marlins to the range this morning, an 1894CL in 32-20 that I was using on the round gongs at 60 yards, an 1894 Classic (Ruger) in 44 Magnum that punched paper and rang the ram at 60 yards, and an 1895GS with a barrel ladder sight installed used to whack the miniature buffalo at 412 yards. Also brough along a 4 5/8" Blackhawk in 45 Colt, a Bisley in 44 Magnum, and a Bisley in 480 Ruger. I was shooting a 115gr RanchDog designed bullet from an Arsenal Mould in the 32-20, loaded in Starline cases with AA #9 lit by a Winchester small pistol primer. The 44 was loaded with a 270gr bullet from an NOE RanchDog 265 grain gas check mould pushed by 2400 and lit by Fed 150s, 45 Colt was a 270SAA bullet of 285 grains from an MP mould pushed by Longshot, the 480 was a 385gr HP from and MP mould pushed by Longshot. For the 45-70, a 415gr bullet from an old Cast Boolits group buy was loaded over IMR 4198 lit by Winchester LR primers. 65 degrees and sunshine with just a light Westerly breeze, beautiful day. Cleanup was a breeze!

Sounds like fun! We had a dreary day, today. We had a high of 50, but it was misting rain all day.

Sounds like a great time! I’ve been trying to wear out my .45 Colt Redhawk but I’m afraid I’m not having a great deal of success.

Re: Fun at the range
I had my 45 Redhawk out on the 31st, shot a bunch of the MO Bullet 325 WFN's over HS6 and H110. I learned 2 things - it needs to be firelapped a bit more, and I need an extra length firing pin from Bowen. It only fires 50% of the time DA with WLP's.

Re: Fun at the range
I went to a cowboy action match... but... forgot to check the number of rounds balls in the box... fell short! Stayed, spotted targets & recorded scores for the rest of the match. Getting a MDQ for failing to shoot 2 stages may seem a bit harsh... but not taking enough ammo to a gun fight is far more serious!
On a positive note... I picked up about 19-½ labs of powder from a friend I helped moved yesterday. 1 lb of Hodgdon 4831, the rest is TiteGroup... Which my son uses for 40S&W and I use in Cowboy45Special and 45Auto.

I was out at our local Range today doing Damage Assessment as part of my Board duties. We got flooded out right before Christmas with plenty of damage. While there the Manager received a call to shut it down. Another Convergence Zone Storm hit and the access road was flooding.

I like Longshot in 480 Ruger. L'iL Gun gets higher velocity, but it burns HOT. H4227 is better in a carbine. 296 is also good.

Thanks Dave. I have been working with it a great deal lately and learning how to shoot it better. I’m impressed with Hamilton Bowen’s improvements.High Desert Hunter wrote: ↑Sun Jan 04, 2026 7:26 pm Beautiful Redhawk Scott! Perfect companion for the Shootist's Marlin.

Well having seen the evidence of your skilled shooting over the years, I'm sure you'll have it mastered in no time! We are blessed to have had such masters available to us, a true golden age of custom firearms! Hope to get to see the Redhawk in person!Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Mon Jan 05, 2026 7:51 amThanks Dave.
