chrono help

Post by dennie »

I have been thinking it is about time to get a chrono. I do not reload a lot of ammo, but it would be nice to know what I am getting when I do. Last week I sent an order to Brownells and while looking thru their catalog I saw a couple of chronos that they offer. They have the Competition Electronics Prochrono Digital for $119.95, and the Prochrono Pal for $94.95. They also offer the Shooting Chrony Beta Chrony for 109.95. I get a 30% discount with my C&R so the prices are well under a hundred bucks.
Does anyone have experience with these brands, or suggestions for other brands?
I have zero experience with chronos so any help and info would be greatly appreciated!

I have the CE ProChrono Digital and I used it this past weekend. It's well made and mine works very well for me. I also have the remote controller so that I can operate it from the bench while it's still on the tri-pod out past the firing line. This is pretty handy. Otherwise you're waiting for a cease fire before you can move it to the next shot string. Your statistics are calculated per shot string ... so you should obviously keep differently loaded cartridges in separate strings.

The Chronys are also very popular and there are all kinds of versions but I have no experience with them.

I will say this ... consider the newer chronographs that are showing up that bring the control and display up to the bench. The numbers on my CE ProChrono Digital are plenty big enough, but it would have been better if it had come with the remote instead of it being an add on. Further, having the display on the remote is probably helpful. My remote has an Infraread port and an RS-232 port for communicating with a computer but it supports only one oddball old HP thermal printer with its infrared port. This is a drawback in my view. Of course, if you send the data over the laptop you can manipulate it and print is with far more versatility.

I just looked at the Brownell's catalog again and find that none of the chronos they offer have a remote listed. It sounds like a great idea to have this feature.
Thanx for the replys. Think I will check out Midway USA and see what they have.

I have a Chrony Beta which I like, seems to work just fine. Whatever you do, get the remote readout and control box, worth every cent extra you might pay.

I swear by the pro chrono I love mine stupid simple to operate, and works great and is simple to use, by the way it is easy to use. I have used mine in direct sunlight and in vary cloudy weather and have never had a failure to read. You get a nice big shooting window to shoot through.

I mounted my Chrony on a 2x6 so it will be the proper distance from where I shoot if I affix one end to the bench and the chrony is mounted to the far end which has a flip-down support adjustable for height. (I shoot at home so the portability isn't an issue). This makes setup easy and fast.

I ALSO mounted a 5-1/2" x 12" piece of 1/2" steel at an angle on the 2x6, sloping up at maybe 20 degrees. This protects the front of the chronograph in case I screw up and shoot low. I hate to admit it, but I HAVE done that, although only with a .22 NAA mini-revolver. Still, it would have ruined the chronograph.

I have a shooting chrony . Not sure which one . But it does have the display that sits on th e bench and uses a basic network cable to plug into the chrony. I got it from midway for I think $80 . Works great it's a good tool to have.
