He has some health issues 'less common for those who don't smoke nor drink alcohol', which could mean a number of serious things.
He says he's having a 'major surgical procedure', which likewise could mean anything from a nephrectomy to a Whipple procedure, but whatever it is, he's a soldier in the army of truth, and one we could all benefit from having around much longer.

I'm currently working on a couple of them - making the most headway on the "The Second World Wars" - a comprehensive recount of the various theatres and backstory of WW2.
But James Michner is a similarly-good author, although not the meticulous 'historian' in the way Hanson is, and his book "Alaksa" has captured my current attention.
