Never trusted those 'fingerprint' locks...

Post by AJMD429 »

.
After seeing several friends whose phones either wouldn't open for them due to some finger swelling or whatever, or opened easily for other people, I would NEVER trust such a device on a gun safe.

Now many are being recalled for the latter reason.

I at least do trust an electronic lock for ONE gun safe (the one the range/target type guns, unloaded, are kept in), but the small safe I use for the 'ready when needed' firearms uses an old fashioned KEY lock - not even a mechanical combination. I just don't trust fancy technology when there is an emergency, if a basic old-fashioned technology will do as well.

After decades of working with my hand and being exposed to all sorts of nasty stuff, not to mention injuries, I have no fingerprints. And that's not me talking. That's The USMC, USA, NASA, Federal Bureau of Prisons, State of California and numerous private companies. All you get is a blob. Just for kicks I tried it on my phone. Same result, not a readable print. Technology may think it has the answer to all problems, but really it only works for some, and it has a temper tantrum when it doesn't.

I have a right hand thumb and 2 left hand fingers whose prints are permanently changed by scars. No, I do not think fingerprint locks are the best thing to use.

I like simple guns. Singleaction and doubleactin sixguns with fixed sights. Semi-automatics with a minimum of operational controls (1911 .. High Power etc.) The less there is to go wrong. Just my preference.

Yep. That's one reason I prefer the Marlin 1894 to the Winchester 92 - fewer parts and less hand-fitting required. I have difficulty liking the Glock vs 1911 or Beretta/Taurus 92 designs due to "all those little stamped Glock parts", although the incredible reliability of the Glock (or Ruger RXM iteration) has swayed me a bit.

AND... they just feel like "real guns" (versus the fantastic plastic)! :D
