Another buckless year

Post by GunnyMack »

Today at 5pm finished our six day firearms season, it used to be bucks only , in recent years the state has merged antlerless in as well.
I spent the first day sitting for 11 hours in 20° weather, seeing only does and fawns. Then I sat Thursday from 10am until dark, again no antlers, 17 does and fawns though.
Today I sat from 830 until dark and only saw 4 baldies.
However I've have three or four different mature bucks on camera, a few little ones also, mostly at night.
I can't remember the last time I shot a buck... at least 8 years ago!

Now maybe my muzzleloader season will be a little better!

At least 4 year old by the looks of them. One buck i got a single picture of it cant make out the rack very well but his body looks like a steer!
Most of our deer here might dress at 150 and that big guy would probably go over 200 dressed.

One and only pic I got was back in late September.
Snowed overnight so when I get over there later today I'll get eyes on the ground and see what I find as for print sizes.
Sadly the farm is covered with barberry, multi floral rose and autumn olive- no way to get through it quietly enough to track.

How much snow is there ? If there’s enough to cushion your steps….
If there is tracks going in, circle it, if there’s not tracks coming out, go in after him. If it’s early enough and if the tracks are fresh, then you have plenty of time to catch up to him. If the tracks aren’t froze over what time did the temperature drop? That’ll tell you when he was through there. But you go have him on camera so that’s a help.

Good luck Will! What muzzleloader are you hunting with?

I had a good 8 point on camera this morning at 340 am, I just got home from the farm and there are so many tracks I dont think a guy could follow one set and follow it without going in circles.

Bill I use either my Lyman 54 , my TC Encore or my Knight- both are 50s.

It's now bow/muzzle loader/permit shotgun. Sunday's are bow only. But I was chasing Sage and pheasants today!

You have to grab the buck track out of the doe and see where he went. Eventually they leave the doe’s.

Sometimes it takes a awhile the PPP's You have to really want it..... good pod cast on this guy who has the P's.
