1.8 cents a grain.
Been a long time since I had any of that powder, but I think I used about 16 grains or so in my 6 mm Remington.
Guess $0.30 for powder then. With today’s primer and bullet prices that’s gonna add up, but I guess in the case of 6 mm Remington it’s gonna beat whatever price I could find for factory loads.

I’m pretty quickly found I liked (or rather my Ruger M77V liked) 48 grains of 4831, and I like that because it was a compressed load so there’s no way I would ever accidentally double charge a case.

I can imagine trying to feed something like an 8 mm Remington ultra magnum or something these days. May as well just stuff dollar bills in the case.

I just grabbed 5 pounds IMR 4198 from a local shop where l hunted.. 70 bucks a lb. Fortunately l have 3 cals l load for with it.

And I was irritated to have to pay $342 for an 8 lb. jug a couple years ago! Now I don't feel so bad anymore!
My old hyphenated cartridges in bigger bores like my .40-65 like 23 grains, and my .45-90 likes around 30 grains.

I was wanting to try it in my 25-20s and a couple different 410 loads but not at that price!

One of the reasons I like the hornet, bee, 25-20 so much is they sip powder unlike my big bores.

I think those are 8lb jugs, 4lbs must have been a typo. Still ... Hodgdon is starting to get "Alliant" fever apparently. My local guy has both H4198 and IMR 4198 for $52 and $56/lb respectively ... no Haz or shipping. He's got an 8lb H4198 on the shelf but I didn't take the time to look at the price when I was in there the other day. It's probably marked in the upper $300's. I'm lucky to have a local guy that doesn't gouge. The most expensive thing he's got is 8lbs of 5744 for $450 but then ... 5744 was always the most expensive of the extruded powders that Hodgdon markets. A single 1lb bottle of 5744 went on GB a couple of months back for $183.

I usually find that when Bruno Shooters Supply has a powder in stock, it's almost always at the best price of about anywhere else online. His prices make it hard for him to keep inventory I think.

Primers have come down substantially in the last couple of months. Powder still seems to be stubbornly high.

Powder Valley has it currently for $435 for 8lbs.

I don't think you'd get great results in the small .25-20 case Gunny. I like 2400 for my .25-20 loads better. I save my 4198 for .38-55 and larger cases.

I know it is listed for either the bee or 25-20, never tried it in anything and was thinking of trying it.

Out of curiosity, I just checked the Midway USA site for H-4198. Now "mixed availability." An 8 lbs. container listed at US $459.99, 1lb. $65.99. As for IMR 42198, same price, now out of stock.
