Lake Speed Jr. has done a couple of videos on filtration with the guys from Donaldson on his The Motor Oil Geek YouTube channel.
What you think about filtration is probably wrong.
One example given was a mining company swapped their giant diesel engines every 30k hours. By simply changing to a higher filtration and a LONGER filter service life they are able to extend the swap to 50k hours.
The first video is great. The second goes more geeky for those that care. The second also get into the diesel fuel circuit in depth. Who knew that modern diesel engines run their injectors at 40,000 psi and the fuel need to be cleaned down to really low micron particle size but the station pumps still use a 1970s standard filter of 30 micron? Gasoline station filters are mandated to 10 micron but gas engines are much more forgiving.

And then there is the problem with lubricity, or rather the lack thereof.Tycer wrote: ↑Fri Dec 12, 2025 7:26 am Lake Speed Jr. has done a couple of videos on filtration with the guys from Donaldson on his The Motor Oil Geek YouTube channel.

Now that was interesting. Guess I've been just lucky so far to keep the old duramax ticking along. My old station must have been giving me some pretty fine fuel and I didn't even know it. And they sold to some other outfit. Might spell trouble ahead.

Many farmers mix Marvel Mystery Oil into their off road diesel as it helps lubricate the sleeves.
When sulphur was removed from diesel fuel, the wear & tear on diesel engines increased.
MMO is a great additive in gasoline as well.

Re: For the diesel users
Both of my Cummins got Amsoil from first oil change until I sold them. I ran a secondary filtration setup for the engine oil. Every 15,000 miles I'd pull a 2oz sample and send it for analysis. If nothing wrong just keep running it.
Amsoil was developed for jet engines, they need the best lubrication possible.
And I was at least a yearly fuel fiter change.
Marvel is great to add to gas or diesel engine oil, makes a nice red colored knife sheath too!
I still run Amsoil cetane boost/ injector cleaner every tank full.

Re: For the diesel users
I occasionally run a lube additive or injector cleaner to the fuel for the semi truck, but seldom add additives to the Duramax or Yanmar engines in the New Holland or Deere tractors. Like to keep my tanks topped off to minimize the possibility that condensation develops in the tanks. I do oil changes on the Kenworth @ 15,000 miles and change out all my filters at that time, doing oil analysis every second oil change. The other diesels only get one oil change per year. The pickup sees an average of 5,000 miles a year, the two diesel farm tractors only see about 30 hours per year, between them.

Marvel also works in gasoline engines.
