For everyone that thinks an old thuty thuty is fine medicine for anything that comes along. Here in the last few weeks we've seen here on this forum both antelope and moose taken with this ancient round that has been said by many to be outdated.
Hats off to these gentlemen that have proven the "AUTHORITIES" wrong. It just goes to show it's not the gun, but the man behind the trigger that makes the difference.

Presently the one I have only has a tiny little lever up on the top off to one side. It's a Handi Rifle. I've seen two that turn my head of late. One was a Marlin W/ a 24" barrel and a little button magazine. The other was a Winchester rifle that had a rather long barrel.
I couldn't afford the Winchester and couldn't make up my mind on the Marlin cause it was no D&T on top for the scope.
I'll keep lookin,

I'm in. After shooting for nearly 40 years I have only recently discovered the merits of the .30-30. While I have an on-going love affair with my .45-70's I have been giving serious consideration as to whether or not I really need anything other than a .30-30, a shotgun and a .22LR. Well, maybe one .45-70 in reserve just in case.

If you can see the big picture, you are not focusing on your front sight.

count me in!!!!
SRC 1925, from Grandpa to Dad to me!
Carbine 1965, picked up for $200.00 local gun shop, shoots little tiny groups.
I've been experimenting with Trail Boss power for low velocity loads, shows promise.
Regards,
Troy

I didn't fail the test, I just found 100 ways to do it wrong.

My first centerfire rifle was a Winchester .30-30. My Dad bought it NIB for me in 1956 when I was 13-years old. We were on our way to a hunting camp in Northern GA and he pulled in to a gunstore and bought it for me. The first animal I killed with that rifle was a Black Bear. I've still got the rifle and use it frequently to this day.

Sure Game Keeper. It's clear to all that your heart is in the right place.
While we're at it I think we need to publish the result of the .30 Mauser bullets in the .30-30 that Hobie and a few others were working on. I think that was one of the causalities of the old board.

27 gr. IMR 3031 under the 85 gr. Sierra SP (same bullet different nose) shot to point of aim at 25 yards with rifle zeroed for 170 gr. SPs over 30 gr. IMR 3031. Did pretty good at 50 yards too. I got a second box of bullets.Rusty wrote:Sure Game Keeper. It's clear to all that your heart is in the right place.

Rusty,
Great idea! Please count me in.
Regarding the .30-30 "PETERS Trapper" cartridge of several decades ago, here's one of the the original cartridges from John Witzel's collection:

As Hobie indicated, based on a dissected specimen, the factory load was 27 grs. of 3031. I have been using 85 gr. FMJ bullets pulled from 7.62x25 ammunition. Velocity runs at 2,000 f.p.s.
John Witzel told me that many years ago, he had spoken with a hunter & trapper whose territory was Northern British Columbia & the Yukon. This fellow told John that he had used the .30-30 cartridges with the little nickel jacketed bullet. He found them to be ideal for dispatching Wolverines and Wolves in traps and for shooting wolves on the ice in the winter and beavers in the spring.
As Hobie indicated, the point of impact is very close to the same as the standard 170 gr. load.
Interesting .30-30 variation.

It's official now, picked up the 1908 Marlin 1893.
Receiver sight ordered, chamber casting material ordered,
will cast chamber and slug bore hopefully tomorrow.
Ranch Dog 165gr mold ordered, have to slug bore and
figure out what to shoot until mold comes in. Have decided
to start the loads using IMR-3031. Would like to work up a
120-150 gr load while I wait for that mold, any druthers on
this one? Was kinda thinkin the 135 or 140 gr would work well
not feelin the 118 gr molds unless I get some real arm twistin'

I believe I will be using the 30-30 deer hunting this year and in future years.
For me it is the whiz bang miracle round. I have a 35 Rem also but I think I will change it over to silhouette duty and hunt with the 30-30.
Then I can just buy copper ammo for it and won't have to mess with developing a load.

There's a gun shop not far from me where the owner just had to have one of the new .300 WSM's. He lost a really nice buck last year because he shot too close in, according to him. He said the bullet just blew up on impact. Even at the time I had to tell him that if he were shootin an old .30-30 he'd have meat in the freezer.
