Took our old levergun to the Range today
We've got an old Marlin Model 1894 .44 Magnum that I have been playing with. Since we put a scope on the Shootists Anniversary levergun I decided to stick the Skinner sight on the .44 ... and while I was at it I added a Marble's ivory bead on the front. So today I took it to the range to sight it in.
Shooting resting the barrel on a wobbly rest and my elbow on the shooting table. I was using the hot loads I shoot in my .44 Special sixgun ... the Keith SWC over 16.5 gr. 2400. This was at 50 yards after I got the sights to where I wanted them.
I have the rear sight all the way down. The zero is somewhere around 80 yards with the bullet being about 1 1/2 inches low at 100 yards. This should do nicely for what we do.
Not bad for an old gun made in 1978.

Yep, not bad for a 20 year old rifle. 1978 WAS just 20 years ago, right?

That's a group to be proud of Jim. Any ideas about velocity?

No. I would get about the same as the Magnum case with 2 more grains of powder. Maybe 1400 out of the rifle?Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Tue Nov 18, 2025 6:58 am That's a group to be proud of Jim. Any ideas about velocity?

Me and CW McCall took the same math course, methinks...
"I looked on out of the window
And I started countin' phone poles
Going by at the rate of four to the seventh power
Well, I put two and two together
And added twelve and carried five
Come up with twenty two thousand telephone poles an hour¨
Lyrics from CW McCall's "Wolf Creek Pass", for those not familiar with the quote...

An iron sighted levergun can be quite accurate and useful. Thanks for taking us along Jim!
