Late Model 1886 TD .33 WCF Markings

Post by Guide89 »

I recently procured a Winchester 1886 Takedown in 33WCF. It's in great shape with a Lyman 21.
I've got a few questions I'm hoping y'all can help me out with.

When did Winchester stop stamping "Model 1886" or "Model 86" on the 1886's upper tang?
This one has "Model 1886" stamped on the right side of the barrel

When was it made? Serial # 159529 A.
I can't seem to find a reliable date of manufacture. Best I can tell is it may be one of the last 500 made. And what does the A mean?

Thanks for the help!

The last recorded serial number for the 1886 Winchesters is #159337 in 1922. The last 1886 sold was in 1935 at #159994. So tough to pinpoint when yours ight fall within this 1923-1935 range.

For the Heck of it I searched it on the net. This popped up...."The Winchester Model 1886 with serial number 159529 was likely manufactured around 1917-1918. The "A" suffix indicates a technical upgrade in the rifle's design, specifically that it has a magazine tube that threads into the receiver, as opposed to the earlier "slip in" tube design."
On the same page there were some Winchester records that seemed to be inline with this.

I'm not sure a takedown should have the A suffix. I have had several 33 td's and I don't think they had the A. Yours is a very late gun, obviously, so it may have been made that way using the parts they had on hand.

There should be a date code on the bottom of the barrel near the receiver. You'll need to remove the forend to see it
