It has begun!

Sage's second bird season that is!
Yesterday was the opener, we hunted but I neglected to take any pictures!
This morning my trusty 'ol reliable ' 20ga Parker, Sage and I took to the fields in less than ideal conditions, damp from fog and squirrly wind and mid 50s. Warmer than i like as the dogs heat up faster but we prevailed with a full game vest!

2 blue roosters, a 'normal' rooster , a hen and 3 Hungarian Partridge. Those Huns are so much fun, by the time we finish stocking they are normally talking up a storm and grouped up which could mean hunting a whole covey!

I gotta admit at first she was acting like a little puppy, no focus -just running around but then she smelled that certain aroma and then it was all business.

It’s great to see a dog get turned on like that.

My little Hunter has turned that corner.

It's funny how they KNOW, Saturday morning I did everything I could to sneak into bird season. I put my thumb inside the bell on her collar while the dogs were outside, got the water bottles filled, loaded my vest, ammo, gun and all three knew exactly what was going on. Of course Claro is in full retirement, a recent cancer diagnosis has broken my heart again- Parker has a bum knee so I won't hunt her much so Sage is now my GO-TO.

Turns out my work day is in a hold pattern, the homeowner we were supposed to start at today has disappeared and hasn't answered the phone, email, text or their front door. So I'm waiting for the boss to call, wandering around the house and each time I walk towards the door Sage thinks we are going hunting!

My JRT was always ready to go. Didn't matter if it was an airgun , shotgun or rifle he knew what was up. I'm considering getting another and train it for birds, I read a story about a woman that trained a JRT for waterfowl.

Great photos, Will. Younger brother and his son and partner had some good hunting over his young Brittany on the Idaho side of the Snake recently for both chukars and huns. I miss hunting the birds and I miss that country.
