anyone use 300gn XTP in 44 mag
In either pistols or lever actions ? Its a lot of bullet, probably overkill for small deer?

I load the 300 gr. Nosler in out 1894 Marlin .44 .. but I wouldn't use 'em on deer. No need for that kind of mass. I have some of the old Speer 225 gr. bullets I am thinking of loading them. They would work just fine. If the 300 gr. XTP shoots well for you, go ahead and use it. If you have to you will most likely be able to shoot through a deer lengthwise or pretty durn close to it.

Back in the mid 90s a couple buddies and I went to shoot some pigs on one of those high fence places. I took my Ruger Carbine. I was running 300 XTPs. I shot the smallest pig of the day, a cut boar that yeilded 222lbs of meat!
I took about a 20 yd shot, through both lungs the bullet went in one side, out the other and hardly expanded by the looks of the exit. It worked fine but I wouldn't use them for deer, much too tough of a bullet. Id go with any 240.
I started using Remington 240 semi jacketed in my muzzleloader, boy howdy did those turn themselves inside out! I then tried a Remington 180gr HP that was magic on deer. Good expansion, shot flat and was able to get a few back from under the hide.
I'd really like to find soft points for 44 and 41 that aren't overly tough like the XTP is.

This is the 210 gr. XTP from my .41 Magnum sixgun that I took a Cow Elk with. In through the chest, stopped in the offside hide. Made a big bulge. I slit it with my knife and popped it out.
Didn't loose but a few grains weight.

Not long after they first came out, I hunted eastern Oregon mule deer with the 300-grain XTP over a case full of 296 in a Super Blackhawk with the 10 1/2-inch barrel and Leupold 2X EER scope. Probably too much bullet for those mulies as others here suggest, but I liked the accuracy of around 4 inches at 100 yards. Never got a shot, but sure liked hunting with that rig, which I fitted with a sling (butt tapped for a stud).

I use the 300gr XTPs in 45 colt (paco loads). They are fearsome.

I also shoot the 300gr. .452 XTP in my muzzleloader. Under 90gr. of blackhorn powder I've chrony'd it between 1750-1765fps. Not sure how that compares to the velocity of a loaded cartridge out of a levergun, but I can tell you that it get's the job done on deer. Most of the bucks I've killed over the last decade have been with this bullet and I've never lost a deer and never found a bullet. pass-throughs every time. Excellent bullet.
