The Unicorn!

Post by TedH »

The most rare of the 375 Winchesters landed in my hands this week, the Valmet 412 Double Rifle. It took literally years to find one for sale, so when I finally found it I didn't waste any time. It has exceeded my expectations for a 45 year old gun. Quite possibly unfired. Came in original box, along with a set of 12 ga barrels, and a set of 30-06 barrels. It will get fired this weekend!
I have not been able to find any reliable info as far as production numbers, but the best I can tell it was just in the double digits to very low triple digits that were made.
If you ever want one of these doubles in 375 and see one for sale, do not pass it up! It'll be years before you see another!

Awesome Ted!

Question, are the other 2 sets of barrels fitted and ready to use? Are you going to try all 3 sets this weekend?

Yes, all the barrels are fitted to this frame. I'm not sure if I'll try all three, but definitely the 375 and 12 ga barrels. There's a Leupold 1-4x20 mounted on the 30-06 barrels with a QD mount that I'm going to move over to the 375 for accuracy testing.

Great, being prefit to the gun is a whole lot better than having to get them fit later.
Im patiently waiting for your range report!

This is most interesting. The possibility of using longer, heavier pointed bullets is intriguing. I have made dummy conversation pieces with 270 gr. spitzers and they are unique looking.

We are thinking the same thing. I put together a dummy round with a 270 gr Hornady RN to see if it chambers ok, which it does. I will load some to try, possibly some 300 gr RN too.

Neat rifle. I've launched the 235 Speers from my No.3 but nothing heavier.

Both the 270 gr. & 300 gr. Hornady's with the lead flattened flush with the jacket look interesting and are quite easy to modify. The simplest method is with the side of a grinding wheel. The sheet metal guard is the perfect rest to place a loaded round to just gently "kiss" the round nose into the side of the wheel and get it flush by rotating. Using the side there is no danger of the wheel's working face clogging with lead. The time necessary against the wheel is so brief there is no danger of overheating the loaded round. The component bullet itself is easily filed, ground or sanded but there are your fingers to consider. Carefully starting the junction of lead and jacket against a running bandsaw blade then rotating the bullet instead of pushing through the blade works but then again, there are your fingers to consider.

Since these will only be used in my double, I won't need to worry about the noses being flat.
