Does anyone here hunt Coues Deer? Or have you?

Post by JimT »

We hunted them a lot when I lived in Oracle, Arizona. The mountains around us had a lot of them. Tough hunting the little guys.

My Dad took a nice one with his old Marlin .30-30 and Paco's 125 gr. load.

I shot this one while sitting in the saddle.

No way he shot that! He's not carrying a 300 Win Mag and wearing Sitka gear!

We usually just wore plain clothes. The deer did not think we were hunting because we weren't camouflaged and we didn't have tactical gear! Fooled 'em.

Learned to hunt in jeans, plaid flannel shirt, boots, hat and jacket. But today's deer are apparently better sighted and much smarter. Today new hunters need rifles capable of one MOA at 1000 yds (because they can't get any closer), camo everything and enough electronics to stock a Radio Shack.

I've never hunted them but have encountered them a number of times. The most memorable was a hike in the Huachucas where I came up a canyon and topped out on a ridge in the pines to find myself in the middle of a herd of around 30 of them. We actually spent a few moments studying each other before they started getting agitated and I moved off.

I had that happen up in the Sierra Anchas above Globe. On a bear hunt I was slowly easing through the woods and got right in among 15 or 20 of them. It was really a neat experience. They didn't stick around long. They did not panic and bust out running ... just slowly started moving away.

Yes, it was pretty neat, fun stuff. Some of the most interesting wildlife encounters seem to happen when you're hunting something else, or not actually hunting at all.

Speaking of Globe, I hear that with all the flooding from the recent rains they have around 1000 LP gas cylinders afloat that they're trying to corral up there.

Sounds like it was pretty bad .... four people killed by the floods ... Globe was a fun little town back in the 1970's and 80's. Used to run up there and go through the antiques shops. Found a lot of interesting stuff from the old days.
