OT - poll of sorts - DSL, RR, Hughsnet or dial up?

Post by O.S.O.K. »

I thought most people had gone to some form of high speed connection. But I just read a couple of posts where members indicated that they were using dialup.

So what's your deal?

I'm using DSL right now but going to Road Runner to save some $$$ shortly.

Dial up was such a drag. Not trying to make anybody feel bad, just man, it was sooooo slow that it drove me crazy - 5 years ago. All of the web sites use such large graphics and such now.....

I couldn't work using dialup (work from home doing CAD design).
I have a T1 connection and use it for sending files up to 2Meg.

I'm using DSL, it's running about 1.25meg@second on downloads There's new fiber optic cable run to the house but they haven't switched it on yet. I won't gain that much in the download speed right away but upload speed(currently 161kbs) should go up a LOT. I was told the new system will support 5gigs of bandwidth per house when fully operational.

Cheap DSL. I don't do a lot of file pushing so the "standard" speeds are fine for me.

I do have Dialup as a backup, but generally if the DSL is out the phone is out too.

I've been on DSL for about 4 years or more now. To be honest about it I think there are a lot of web designers out there who are very inconsiderate in the way they make their pages. They really should know not everyone has hi speed. I guess that's one way the old mail lists were better than these new forums, but man the e-mails they can generate.

Me too. I live in town though, and around here that's the only way to get DSL. All others are stuck with dial-up or farming it out to sat/cable companys if they want something faster.

Why don't you make a poll?

I use dialup, I just disabled the graphics on this site so the text comes up quickly.

You're right, most web designers really load up the bandwidth. I can hardly stand Amazon.com anymore. That's ok, who needs to buy stuff all the time?

I certainly don't need more to check my e-mail, so I have no plans to change.

Have cable at home, had DSL at work (now cable) and couldn't tell the difference for the forum. ELSEWHERE, might be an issue, not here.

Been on Hughes net for a couple of years... in Mi and OK we lived just beyond cable-dsl service buy a mile or so.

I like the service... runs fast enough to see video and push files. Cheap enough for the quality of service.

Downside... when we moved ... Hughes has terrible customer service. It took us at least 20 phone calls to get the suspension of service and reconnection straightend out. YOU WILL SPEAK TO INDIANS forever until you gripe enough... then you may get a USA number for some more runaround... they will keep you on hold forever.

I don't know what they call it but my internet runs to a radio tower then to a satelite. I get anywhere from 600k to 1.5m all for $30 a month which is good enough for me living 12 miles from the nearest town.

I have Broadcast DSL. It comes from a tower about 4 miles away to a Dish type setup on my house. It varies on speed some, I use my laptop and have wireless in the house. My desktops are connected direct and are faster. Also just picked up an aircard (ATT) for the laptop for traveling, with I do alot of.

I use Road Runner cable. I have there fastest speed option. I started using 300 bps modems for connecting to individual computers (generally using some sort of bulletin board software) many moons ago. We truely have come a long way. There is, however, a trend that may revert to the old days. Way back when, the whole ISP thing started, you payed based on how much you uploaded and or downloaded. You could sort of select your tier. Some ISP are taking about going back to that. Hope it doesn't happen. Some folks really burn up bandwidth with large multimedia files. These are the folks they are aiming at. Some of the ISP's have been caught deliberately slowing down the connections in some cases. Hope it doesn't happen to me, I'd be just a bit upset.

Interesting. I din't know if the wifi service like I had in rural Texas was done eslewhere - apparently, it is. This is all done through line of sight towers that hook to some source of internet. The folks that owned the service I used had previously offered wireless communication services to businesses (radios).

Good thing this board is low bandwidth. There seem to be a pretty large number of dialup folks on here.

You guys using NetZero? That's what I had previously - and it did go faster than the non-cached service I had before that...

And I have to agree that the web designers out there are really pushing the need for broadband, high speed service - there are many sites that you simply can't access with dialup...

But then, that's capitalism at work I guess.

I live out in the sticks. Yes, we have a phone line (a good thing since cell phones have no reception), so I have dialup. If I get 45K, I'm so very happy. Usually, I do not get that kind of connection since the phone lines are not so hot. Still, it's the only game in town....er....sticks.

DSL at home, Sprint wireless on the road. Speeds on the Sprint vary wildly, from very fast to slower than 14400. Surprisingly enough we were one of the 1st areas in our county to get DSL. Up in town they waited up to a year longer. 8)

T1 for the price of DSL/Cable...Company I used to be with paid for a direct T1 to my house since there was absolutely no available service fast enough at the time. After the company I worked for at the time sold off, our local cable company offered to buy the line (usage) from me. I retained the T1 service at their cost and they give me free cable, end cost is about $9 a month to me.
