Gambel's quail

Post by Bill in Oregon »

These rascals had a very good breeding season this spring and summer here in southern New Mexico and are really putting on the weight for winter. No more squeezing through cyclone fencing -- they have to go around and they hate that!

When I lived in Oracle, AZ we had quail hunters coming in from all over the US. The Pastor of the Assembly of God church was a close friend and he raised hunting dogs and guided most of those hunts. They took over 8000 quail a year. There is a large valley near Oracle where they have Gambel quail, Scaled quail (Scaleys), and Mearns quail (Montezuma quail). And there were a lot of them.

I used to feed Gamble quail that hung around my horse pasture. It was always cute when they would bring all their babies up while I was scattering feed for them.

Will, if I can ever finish working on my new shack, I will poke around the public lands near here and see if I can find some birds. We also have small numbers of Montezuma quail up in the higher pine/oak savannas in the Gila National Forest. I would love to even see one!

When I lived in Trinidad CO, we had some quail , few and far between so I never bothered to hunt them. I was living on a 500acre farm( a postage stamp lot per western ranches) I had free range to hunt all of it. Once the owner cut his wheat or oats the doves would flock to those spots. One day a few of us were spread out blasting them good. My poor dog ,Lady was run ragged retrieving when one of the guys hollered QUAIL! He managed to drop one but couldn't find it and yelled bring to dog. We found the dead quail, he was practically standing on it. So my Lady got to fetch a quail but not by my hand.
