45lc in 410ga Stevens break action

Post by mickbr »

Not my video nor recommendation, but if you were desperate or starving I guess. The fella hits a silhouette target he says is 50 yards too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX9F2m6DZzc

Have seen similar vids of fellas using 44mag in 410ga as well.

Al most tempted to buy an old Stevens or boito break action and put a few boxes of 44mag and 45colt through it, to see what happens by the end. ...Fired by remote string of course. :D

How many shots would convince you it's safe? probably never trust it but if the substance hits the fan you could use it in a pinch I guess

Bieng able to shoot 410, 44mag, 44 special, 45colt, 44-40 would make an interesting survival gun...if you could trust it

I have seen an old single barrel .410 marked .44 or .410, I have a Stevens .410 but the full choke has put me off trying it otherwise the .410 built on a 12 gauge action looks pretty strong to me. I certainly wouldn't try it with any Turkish made .410.

I wouldn't try it with more than modified choke and that would not be holding the gun.
Long time ago I heard about the 45 Colt being fired in a 410, never saw it done or tried it.

I'm not going to try it with my guns though!

Back in the 20th Century, I knew of folks in the Amazon basin that carried a 44-40 round with them in their hunting pouch, precisely for that "what if" situation they might face should a large amazonian feline come calling while they were waiting for deer at night. They didn't trust their dubious handloads for such encounters, figuring they'd be better off with the 44 WCF round should such occur. The CBC 410 (called a "36" by the Brazilian industry at the time) was built like a bank vault and had a massive amount of steel around the chamber. I'd have no qualms about shooting a 44 WCF through one of them, even today. Lighter built guns like my Boito? I'd really have to be desperate, although I'd trust the 44 WCF more than the larger 45 Colt. I'd definitely not be interested in a magnum level 44 OR 45 Colt load.

I have done some experimenting along this line and my advice is carry a solid wiping stick/rod for loosening stuck cases. A 3/8" dowel rod at .375" +/- just barely clears the full choke. .444 marlin cases fit in some .410s and clever round-ball (2 or 3) loads can be crafted. Elongated bullets fired from a smooth bore must yaw/tumble. The modern military applications (abrams) have fins that self-deploy for stabilization. Simply replacing fine shot in factory 3" .410 loads with .375" percussion revolver balls (3) out performs any elongated pistol bullets.

I shot .44-40's in my 410 single shot and they did fine. That was back in the 1960's. I was reloading .44-40 and .410 and put a lot of .430 bullet down the barrel of the .410.

I also shot .30-30 factory loads in them. Point it straight up, pull the trigger .. BOOM ... bullet goes up about 10 or 15 feet. And if the brass did not split I had an all-brass shell to reload.

How about .45 colt shot shells. You'd have to be darned close, but it would be a doable snake gun.

My dad said the old time poachers often used a 410 and would slip a .45 Colt in if an opportunity arose.

I never used a 410 as a kid since 16 was cheaper and had more bang.

What type of choke are people shooting the .45 colt and .44WCF out of in their .410 shotguns?

Thanks!

Seems like 41 mag would be the cartridge you'd wanna try this with?

Mine was full choke. Lead slugs size down easily.

Thanks Jim. My single shot.410 is full choke, but feels solid. I am a little less confident in trying it in the .22/.410 Savage combo gun.

in this vid they use a single barrel 410 with .387 full choke and run full house 444 marlin and 454 Casull through it. The casull load is estimated to be 55,000PSI and its a jacketed bullet and its fired into water jugs where the bullet fragments so the inference is the gun is taking a decent amount of pressure. No damage measured at the action nor choke end. Not that I'd want to try that extreme but it does make a strong 410 single shot look like a good survival gun in a pinch.....

Those guys crack me up. "You'd think this was a quality firearm, but it's not." I'm not sure what they judge as "a quality firearm", but putting up with that sort of abuse and coming up grinning and asking for more? that's one decent shooting iron, right there. By the way, that's the model of shotgun I mentioned above. Couldn't make out the stamping on the barrel, but the ones I was familiar with way back when were made by CBC (Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos) - the same folks that make (or are made by?) Magtech ammo, haven't kept up with who purchased whom. They also made a 32-20 rifle on the same action. I knew a guy that had one and reloaded for it. He was of the "If a little bit is fine, a bit more is better, and who needs data or reloading manuals?" persuasion. I'd love to have the chronograph results of some of the loads he cooked up. Anyway, that old rifle swallowed them all and kept on going.

Thanks for sharing the video. Now I've gotta keep my eyes open for an old CBC in some pawnshop in the middle of nowhere...

A bullet sizes up or down to fit the bore. It's done in a thousandth part of a second. Read P.O. Ackley's experiments firing .35 caliber bullets out of a .30-06.

A bullet stopped in the bore causes an issue when another bullet is fired up behind it. The bullet coming forward is compressing the air and the slug stopped in the bore needs high pressure to get it moving. The shockwave coming to the base of the stuck bullet causes the bullet to swell up, bulging the barrel. Then it moves and is sized down again and goes on out the bore. It could split a thin barrel I am sure.

This is an 1860 Army .44 barrel that had a stuck round ball in the bore. A full load was fired after the squib load because the shooter did not realize the previous shot had not exited. It bulged the barrel but did not hurt the accuracy. Just looks ugly.

I've seen .45 Colts and .45 ACP 1911's with full power loads do the same thing ... and .357 Magnums. The pistol was not harmed other than needing a new barrel.

But if you fire an oversize bullet down a bore .. rifled or smoothbore .. with nothing in front of it, it will size down quite a bit with no issues. The .300 Blackout fired in a 5.56 turned the bullet into a very long .22 bullet. I don't recommend it but as far as I know, no guns were destroyed.
problem.jpg
WHAT WRECKS THE FIREARMS USING OVERSIZE BULLETS IS IF THE CARTRIDGE DOES NOT SEAL THE CHAMBER TO KEEP THE EXPANDING GAS FROM RUSHING BACK THROUGH THE ACTION. IF THE GAS CAN COME BACK THROUGH THE ACTION IT CAN DESTROY THE ACTION OF THE FIREARM.

Again ... read P.O. Ackley's laboratory tests on oversize bullets in rifles.
