My Grandsons Have An Egg Business ...

Post by JimT »

Last night the youngest came running into the house yelling about a huge snake in the chicken coop. I went out to see what all the excitement was about and sure enough, there in one of the nest boxes was a big ole snake! And it had swallowed 3 eggs! The boys were upset. That's like taking money from them!!

Since the snake had finished its dinner I gave it a .22 hollowpoint for dessert.

It was 4 feet 10 inches long ...

We are raising chicks and started with 46. We lost almost 20 of them the first month. I think this ole boy probably got more than a few. But we stopped that.

What brand of snake is it?

I guess the boys have learned a bit about raising critters and losing them by now.

As we know all snakes are beneficial but when they are raiding the hen house all bets are off!

I have caught a few of these around the coop at night, but there's no way they can get in. I took 'em out to the horse pasture and told 'em not to come back. We have a daylight til dusk door so this one had to come in while the door is open during the day.

I've had a Burmese python, 2 red tail boas, 2 rainbow boas, a California king snake, a Kenya sand boa. All were tame and very user friendly.
One day I was at the drive thru at the bank, the Burmese was on my dashboard, head to the driver's window. The teller was watching the snake while doing my transaction and finally curiosity got the better of her and she hit the microphone asking if the snake was real. I said no it's fake just as the snake flicked it's tongue. The teller did a high jump over the chest high counter and ran to the far side of the bank. Another teller peeked along the side of the window, saw me knowing who I was and asked what happened. I said my snake scared her. She laughed heartily!
While living in CO I rented an old adobe house, the walls crawled during the winter from all the mice. One night my California king got out, 6 weeks later he reappears a foot longer!

No. I carry my Bearcat Shopkeeper around the property for such occasions. I have killed 8 raccoons with it.

.
We will let snakes eat the occasional egg and don't shoot hawks or eagles or owls when caught eating birds, but raccoons, possums, feral cats, and weasels are all gonna die if they get in or even near the coop.

Mostly depends on the damage potential and species population as to what predators we deal with versus share with.
