Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
I replaced the cross-safety with a Saddle Ring.

Outstanding addition, Jim!

Cool,,, Now tie a strip of latigo on the ring to keep it from rattling around.

Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
I’ve never noticed any rattling. When in the scabbard I run a leather thong through the ring with a slip knot so I don’t leave anything in the ring.needsmostuff wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 10:33 am Cool,,, Now tie a strip of latigo on the ring to keep it from rattling around.
Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
I never noticed any rattle from the saddle ring on my '94 Trapper .30-30 either.

Same here. And I’ve carried this gun everywhere for more than 40 years.

Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
I assume the saddle ring is more nostalgia nowadays , as most of us don’t have a horse, well at least I don’t.
Is there another benefit to one ?

Did you have to get a taller front sight when you put the Skinner sights on?

Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
The cross bolt safety is not safe in my opinion. I’ve done this with all my Marlins that were equipped with cross bolt safeties.

If you are hunting dangerous game or using the gun for self-defense, it could get you hurt or worse.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Sat Jul 19, 2025 4:59 pmThe cross bolt safety is not safe in my opinion. I’ve done this with all my Marlins that were equipped with cross bolt safeties.

Is there some sort of kit available or is this a DIY thing?Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Sat Jul 19, 2025 4:59 pmThe cross bolt safety is not safe in my opinion. I’ve done this with all my Marlins that were equipped with cross bolt safeties.
Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
You can use a cavalry sling as shown in this old thread. I've meant to make one up forever and still haven't.

This is a very clean way to fix the safety.

Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
Benefits:
1 you get rid of the cross bolt that will be in the wrong position when you need the rifle.
2. A saddle scabbard is just as useful on a 4 wheeler or in a Jeep as it is on a horse. When I’m on the border, my leverguns ins strapped to the back of my passenger seat in the pickup. When I’m on the tractor, the rifle stays strapped and with a thong through the ring.
3. With a thong or a loop of parachute cord, you can hang the gun on the wall on a nail and it is still readily available.
4. It just has way these guns are supposed to be made.
Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
Looks much better without the unnecessary push button safety!
I replaced the safety on my Marlin Cowboy.
My other Marlins are pre safety.

Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
I’m at about 500 rounds through my 40th anniversary Ruger/Marlin and I can’t find any fault with it.
I have it sighted to hit at the top of the bead at 25 yards and it hits the middle of the bead out at 70 yards. Hold up on the top third of the plate and you don’t miss an 8 inch plate at 100 yards.
This is with a 255 gr bullet over 7.2 gr of 231. Not a barn burner but quite useful.
Now it rides in the truck all the time.

Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
Neat, thanks Jim. I guessing that is the up/down orientation, not the fore/aft option?
Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
You can turn it any way you want it. But if you want it tight so it doesn't move you have to install it with the set screw and ball so it locks into the detent. I've never seen one on a levergun that moved fore and aft, though I am sure some changed theirs to that.

Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
You can buy it either way. But I believe both of ours are up and down as that was all that was available when I ordered them.samsi wrote: ↑Sun Jul 20, 2025 6:47 pmNeat, thanks Jim. I guessing that is the up/down orientation, not the fore/aft option?
Re: Nice Upgrade for The Shootists Marlin
I wasn't aware of the option either. But like I said, I have never seen one mounted with fore and aft positioning on any of the old guns. I am sure some folk did it. We all have our personal needs and preferences.
