HOW TO SPIN A SIXGUN

Post by ANDYLARSSON »

Anyone else have one of these booklets when you were a kid???

I loved mine enough to have a reprint made. Enjoy!

”How To Spin a Sixgun” and “The Secrets to Fast Draw” by Daisy with Arvo Ojala

In 1960 the Daisy BB gun company in Rodgers Arkansas published this booklet to promote their “Spitting Image” Single Action Revolvers.

Featuring the Hollywood Technical Advisor to the stars of the Western Movies and TV shows we love, this booklet features step by step how the Fast Draw, Flat Spin, Border Shift and many other revolver twirling stunts were performed.

Skinner Sights commissioned a faithful to the original, reprint of this booklet so more of us could enjoy it. Originals are scarce and bring high dollars at auction.

Excellently printed, the booklet measures approximately 5 1/2” X 8”

These will make great conversation starters and are interesting to read (Also packed with pictures for those of us who are more visual learners)

The Rodgers Daisy Airgun Gun Museum described the original in a Facebook post several years ago.

Fun Fact Wednesday - Here we go. This one is for all of you TV Western Fans.

The opening scene of the early black and white Gunsmoke TV series shows Matt Dillon drawing and shooting a lone gunman. What some people may not know is that the actor who played the unnamed man with the doomed destiny, was actually the man who taught James Arness, better known as Matt Dillion, how to draw so darn fast. Arvo Ojala said as a joke on the producers, James Arness and Arvo actually did the opener once where Arvo shot Matt Dillon and he fell to the ground.

The lone gunman was the quick-draw technical advisor to Hollywood stars, Arvo Ojala. Arvo taught other actors such as Hugh O'Brian, Clint Walker, Paul Newman, and James Garner, just to name a few. When a close-up of speed or spinning revolver shot was called for, that was actually Arvo's hand.

How fast was he? His speed was clocked and verified numerous times. He could draw, fire and hit the target in 1/6 of a second. That is literally faster than the blink of an eye. When Arvo watched the westerns, he noticed they were slow because the cylinder of their guns got stuck on their holster. His technique was to keep the cylinder free. He even made special holsters lined with metal for quicker release.

Daisy put out a special line of custom Arvo Ojala holsters and a booklet which cost 25 cents. The booklet, put out in 1960, was called "How To Spin a Six Gun and Secrets of the Fast Draw". Lots of photo instructions on how to draw and spin like a pro. There was even a catalog in the back with his holster rigs.

Note: This booklet is for educational and entertainment purposes only. Never spin, quick draw, or handle a firearm in an unsafe manner.

One of my favorite gun handling exhibitions was put on by two of the greatest performers in history. And both students of Arvo.

Ordered my copy. 8)
Never had a Daisy BB pistol, but had Mattel Fanner 50s as well as a bunch of other cap guns.
That fast draw stuff seemed to have captured a lot of imaginations in the 1950s and 1960s.

I never did care much for the revolver spinning, but I did learn to fast draw from his fast draw book years ago.
