New scattergun

Post by Pat C »

Been looking for an old Westerfield model 30 with birdog on side. For a while. Stars finally aligned . Store brand via Stevens 520 pre war takedown. Which is the most fascinating part of the gun. Should be here next week.

This is a internet pic but you see how takedown works.Tge mag tube turns and threaded on end. This releases a metal key so barrel assembly lifts off.

Pat, I have had a couple of that design over the years. The machining is excellent. These sometimes go for very little money and are a bargain if you ask me. Often covered in dust in the corner ... 8)

Most of these are rough shape this one seems nice and well used .came out of Nebraska.

Anouther pic off internet but close up of takedown system.
The mag tube spins by hand and unthreads releasing the key from frame mortise. Then the two halves slide apart.

Browning Patent made by Stevens as the model 520

Wards Westernfield Model 30
Sears Ranger Model 30

Well after years of searching for this exact shotgun at reasonable price it appears it's either lost or stolen.

It was misrouted 5 hours away to anouther state. And suddenly no updates since Sunday. Local PO called and emailed apparently it was scanned 9 times at same place.as seen on security cameras. But who know what happened to it.

My guess stolen taken apart and box was probably set aside.
Just my luck 😐

Opened a service request with US Postal service today. The lady that helped me confirmed what my local PO said Thursday it had been scanned 9 times at same location.

It shows it's moving North now going further away each time it was scanned twice today. . They can pull surveillance footage as scanners are GPS located at scan .

Quite possible contents are gone and box was deliberately sent in wrong direction. We'll see . If not in route by first of next week I can call the OIG and see what is next step.

Pat, don't give up hope. Several of us have had packages shipped in circles by the USPS lately, sometimes taking weeks to arrive.

It would be nice if they would call the next destination and say hold that package since they know what package it looks like, tracking info etc and then reroute it to you. I know that's asking a lot from USPS.

I went Friday to PO where it should have went. They went out of there way to try to contact. They could not get a direct call or email answer . They had a whole stack of papers stapled together with my contact info. They originally said it was scanned 9 times. I guess they used the informed delivery tool to see pictures ?

I've tried to call distribution centers every day since know one answers the phone. You used to be able to call individual locations now it just rings and rings.
When I called to start service request that lady also could see all the scans and made note that something was really wrong.

No updates today

Finally after opening the service request which they forwarded to the OIG . Once you tell them a firearm is in the box stuff starts happening quick .They called me multiple times.

Everytime mail is scanned it takes a picture plus audio sounds. They saw where the box was scanned 9 times t one place.

Luckily the box looked perfect , label perfect . Just either personnel issues or equipment failure maybe.

I wish I had known you were looking for one. Mine just sold last week after being on consignment for several months. It was a 16 ga. with a solid rib. Never got to shoot it.

It's in hand now once I opened the service request and told them a firearm was in the package They jumped right on it.
They went straight to the scan pictures to look to see what the heck was going on . One place scanned it 9 times.

The shipping label was and remains perfect . Obviously they would reviel source of problem .

Things to help now are the scan pictures everytime it's scanned it photographs label. Plus GPS records exactly where it is located.

The shotgun I purchased was a very specific model , Had to be prewar, 12 gauge, Westernfield with bird dog marked, That's exactly what I received.

Glad to hear it made it to you! Those old pumps are sleepers. Many folks don't realize how good the store brands can be.

The base gun was made in 1930'sh and is the Stevens 520 .
Everything on these are built from heavy drop forged parts.
I've got it all disassembled and will detail clean it Friday.

One screw was missing I'll need to make. But it's tight and bore is mirror shine. Came out of Nebraska probably somebody's pride bird gun for years.

The intricate takedown system is my favorite part.

It makes you wonder how many pheasant it took down over the decades.
