Caliber is not marked anywhere on the rifle. It is chambered for .30-40 Krag. Very smooth and locks up tight. The bore even looks good.

A tight patch slides smoothly muzzle to chamber and back.

It was marked .30-06 on the tag. But the markings indicate otherwise.

In my personal, not so valuable opinion, the 30-40 Krag, and.303 British, are much better matches for this action. For some geometric reason, the 30-40 and .303 will hold five cartridges, but the 30-06 only hold four.

I think the .30-40 Krag is a better choice than the.30-06 simply because of the action and how it locks.

Fine looking carbine always wanted a 38-72, i passed on a 30 krag years back and still regret it. Let us know how she carries 95s are notoriously awkward in hand. Have fun!

All time favorite Winchester!

My SRCs are both .30-06 with a lot of miles, whitetail and round count through the one with the peep sight.

The other two, 7.62x54r Russian Contract and grandpa's .35 WCF.
My opinion is the rimmed cartridges feed better, but none of these have ever let me down.

I've been chasing a .303 SRC for a long time, but the bores are usually non-existent.

Nice snag. IIRC Teddy Roosevelt used an 1895 in 30-40 Krag in Africa. Again, if memory serves me, he specifically mentions taking a giraffe with it. My guess is his was the rifle length, not the SRC like you got. That looks like a handy bit of ordinance you managed to snag!

Scott: If you remove the upper handguard, the caliber designation should be there. Without digging mine out, it's marked on the left side of the barrel as either "30 Army", or "30 US".

have several original 1895s , including a 405, and a russian musket, and an NRA musket,

but my favorite is this SRC in 30/06 .it has the lyman receiver sight. i have a lower pressure load but with excellent velocity that puts 3 shots in one hole at 50 yds








this is one that i hope to take hunting one day

Very nice! I don't own a 95. If I did, I'd want one in 30-40 Krag. I have a good friend with a nice carbine like yours. My youngest son has a beautiful special order take down in 35WCF.

i did have one in 35 WCF...almost too nice to use, and since i had the 405 i sold it to a friend. sorta wish i had kept it. its a great caliber !

I suppose so.

In this case, the .30-06 is too long to chamber. So it’s definitely not a .30-03 or .30-06.

However .30-40 Krag ammo feeds and ejects properly.
