Jay, did you make it out for a ride yesterday? I went for a 100+ mile ride yesterday and it was wonderful. It was a perfect day and although I had initially planned on a shorter ride, it was so nice that I just kept going. I haven't ridden the BMW for such a long time that I need to practice coming to a stop more smoothly instead of my legs flailing around before I come to a complete stop. Must look ridiculous.

Yes, I did. It was beautiful here too. I took the TW yesterday. Ended up riding 110 miles. Got up into some of my old stomping grounds by my old camp in Kingsbury. Made it up to Austin pond. Hadn't ridden those trails in 20 years. I would have ride all the way to Greenville but I was running short on time. First long ride I've taken the TW on this year. I still really like it. It's a great trail bike. Yesterday was the first time I rode it with actual riding gear. It was much more comfortable.

Jay, 110 miles is a heck of a long way on that little bike. Did you stop a few times to get the kinks out of your joints? Was that ride largely dirt? Glad you had a good time!

Hey Walt!
I actually did surprisingly well. I've ridden it farther and was pretty saddle sore, but I wore jeans and work boots. For the first time, I wore my riding gear on it this week. Made a night and day difference. I even had a backpack on. I stopped long enough in Bingham (about 35 miles in) to top off the tank, but that was my longest stop. I took mostly road from above my camp back home cause I was getting low on time. About 20 miles.
The riding gear definitely made it more comfortable. It's an awesome little bike. There will come a time when it's my only bike. At some point I won't be able to get my leg o er the DRZ.
I did buy a nice Nelson Rigg dual sport trail bag for it. My next ride I'm planning will be to Greenville. That will be a long one!

I hear that! I reached a point a couple of years ago when I couldn't swing my leg over the DR-Z any more so I've had to step onto the foot peg for my leg to clear the tailbag. BTW your new tailbag looks great. The one on my bike is smaller but is expandable to about twice its collapsed height..

Haha I've caught my leg a couple times too. Mine expands also. I think to 11 inches high. I probably couldn't get on the bike haha! Now that it's set up for me, I think I made the right choice. The DRZ is a great bike, and more than enough for me at this stage. It's a lot more bike than the KLX300 would have been.

Back when I had even less sense than I have now I got into one or two situations where it was desirable to voluntarily dismount, I never had anything obstructing my ability to ditch the bike except for the occasional girl friends....... I had similar thoughts when I took up horse riding as if possible I prefer to pick my landing rather than be catapulted into it...

A couple weeks ago I spun out at about 30mph on a 90 degree turn on a gravel road. Instead of exiting the vehicle, "20yo Jay's brain" took over and made the call to ride it out. I was at full lock turned to the left with my left foot dragging and supporting the weight. I managed to hold on until I was on the opposite side of the road faced the way I came from.
It worked out........this time. But I'm not 20 anymore.

I dug out the MaCullock weed wacker and mowed down the Daffodils, I was surprised how easily it started after so long without use, I only started it up once over winter. My son bought a cordless weed wacker that does a good job but I like noise and smoke...
The new Remington air rifle is coming along I am getting good tight groups at about 20yds with the fibre optic sights, haven't tried it out at longer range but my old eyes keep calling out for a scope and I'm not ready for that yet I'm still using the heavy Bisley hollow point pest control pellets, I have tried a few Milbro TR pellets that are lighter and they penetrate into wood a lot better and group a bit higher even at such short range. I'll have to buy the pellets I want online as there's no one around here that stocks them. I will say one thing about those Bisley slugs they certainly stop whatever I hit I'll be interested to see if the lighter pellets do as well with the increased velocity.

Thanks for the update on the Rifle buddy. I will have to Google those pellets and take a look. I'm interested in this subject because I invision myself taking my dad's place at some point in the future.
There's a guy at work who has a YouTube channel shooting squirrels at insane distances with an air rifle. I think it's of Russian manufacture.

I'm hoping to try a few different pellets as the Bisley pest control are hollow points and I can't see that as an advantage at 600fps I have always preferred round nose pellets. Does the guy at work use .22 or.177?
I have always preferred .177 but lately it has taken me twice as long to get the tiny pellets into the breech my fingers have sure got clumsy with age hence the change to .22 .

Wow, 11! I worry about them here this year. It was a cold and wet spring. We lose a lot to weather like that.

I need to get used to the trajectory of these .22 pellets they sure ain't as flat shooting as the .177 I missed an easy 30+ yard shot on a Jackdaw just ordered some RWS Hobby flat head @11.9g maybe they will be fast enough.

I always wondered how much more trajectory the .22s had. Di tou know how much velocity you're getting?

I don't have a chronograph but according to reviews I have seen with average to heavy .22 pellets out of a sub 12 FTP rifle velocity is between 550 to 600 FPS the lightweight pellets should be well above 600 FPS, UK law restricts air rifles to 12 FTP at the muzzle. My son has a slot on his licence for a full power firearm certificate air rifle but he hasn't decided what to go for, I guess in the States you don't have that problem.

Yeah, I've never heard of such a thing. But I'm sure it will proposed at some point. If I recall, my .177s back in the day were around 700fps. I got quite a lot done with them too. My sons is at 1000fps. That would have been unthinkable to us back when we were kids running wild.

The last .177 I was using was spitting them out at about 770fps, when my son buys his high-powered air rifle he will expect unbelievable to me velocities, I just prefer .22 Lr when I need that sort of power but there are quite a few places that request only airguns to be used for pest control...

All the guys out of town used .22s, and I would have too, but we couldn't in town. There wasn't any restrictions on air rifles though. I get it though. A .22LR has quite a bit of power for in town. I'm not gonna say I HAVEN'T used one, but it was when I was older.
Heck.....we used to check loads for pressure in the garage. I've fired 44-40s in the garage at my dads.

While I've had my tractor home, I've been working on my latest hillbilly project. Us hicks can't afford a Fransgard or Farmi winch for our tractors, so we make our own.
Last year, I bought the little log skidder to go on the hitch of my tractor. It works great, and I used it thus past winter to cut my wood. The only downside is I have to get my tractor to the downed tree to hitch it for the twitch out.
I don't cut enough wood to justify the thousands for a tractor logging winch. Plus, I'd have to remove and store it when I'm not using it.
I noticed last winter that my skidder is made from 2" square tubing and there was a plastic plug in the top. I got an idea that if I got a receiver hitch with a flat 90 degree plate for a pintle setup, I could mount an ATV winch on it. Then drill a pin hole for the receiver. Then I could take it on and off just by pulling the pin. I could now winch my logs to the tractor and can keep the tractor in the twitch trails. Here's a couple pics. Check out my sketchy drill press setup. I clamped the end on my drill table. Then put the other end on my motorcycle jack and a milk crate with a magnetic torpedo level on the skidder.

My RWS Hobby pellets arrived today, I'm impressed so far they seem very accurate but the wind is blowing a hooley so I've only fired about 10 shots and they sound a lot faster.

Well, I saddled up the DRZ this morning and rode 24 miles of pavement over to Newport. I got on the old track bed and rode all the way to Greenville. Beautiful ride up. I snapped a quick pic of the float plane on Moosehead lake, gassed up, and headed back.
I rode the track bed back down as far as Blanchard, then cut across hills to Kingsbury by our old camp. I rode some of this route with the sled this past winter. Back in the day, we used to leave our old camp and make this ride with 4 wheelers. It's been at least 25 years since I've done it. I rode 160 miles total.

I know a lot of guys hack on the seat, but I don't think it's that bad. It's very firm and narrow, but I kind of like that on a dirt bike. It's not bad with riding gear on. I gassed up in Greenville and didn't get back off it till I got home. Of course, I stand up in the knarley sections. I'm sure a Seat Concepts seat would be better but I doubt I will replace it. I'm going to need a rear tire first.
The other thing many seem to replace is the footpegs, but honestly, I'm good with those too. I have bigger aftermarket pegs on the TW, but those stockers are really small.
I bought new MSR riding gear recently and yesterday was the maiden voyage. It was great.

You certainly get to see some beautiful country when on two wheels that you probably wouldn't get to see even in a Jeep.... love the photos especially the one with the float plane, always wanted to have a flight in one.

I saw both Partridges today sadly without any chicks the Redleg partridge does not do well in English climate they much prefer Portugal, the English grey partridge numbers crashed several years ago but they are making a comeback on a few sporting estates where a lot of effort has gone into breeding and predator control.

Thanks buddy. I've been in a few float planes. Bush type flying into ponds to fly fish. It's a blast! Moosehead is the largest lake in the state, and it's a beautiful place. It's northeast of me about 60 or 70 miles. There is an old Dehaveland Beaver on floats that I flew in when I was a kid. There is also the only C47 on floats there. Pretty cool. I know a guy that runs a flying service there.

Sorry about the chick's. Many dont make it here either. Thise partridge look a lot different than ours, but they are pretty. I saw one riding the other day, along with a deer.
