Update on the Shootist Carbine

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

Andy was so helpful at the Holiday in replacing front sights on these guns.

I wanted one that was slightly shorter and I wanted a gold bead. Andy replaced the sight at the picnic table and after a minor adjustment I was hammering an 8 inch disk at 50 yards offhand.

I put it on steel yesterday at 100 yards and it’s good to go with 8 gr of 231 and a 250 gr machine cast RNFP.

This is so handy and plenty useful. I fired the last 8 shots without ear protection just to check what that would be like. Not much blast at all.

Thanks for the update, Scott! Someday, the Good Lord willing, I'll get a chance to play with one that's got my name on it... in the meantime the reports on what's working are very welcome. I've a bunch of 452190 (if I recall the mold number correctly) cast up that should be a good starting place. I'll have to try some 300gr "just because", of course. But the main idea is to have a good companion piece for my TGW 45 Colt and it only gets shot with "normal" 45 Colt loads.

I know what you mean about "handy"! While I like my "Short Rifle" Rossi 92 in 45 Colt, the Uberti '73 with it's 18-½" bbl is muy bueno. But, the 17" Marlin takes the cake. Cut down from a "Cowboy" octagon bbl, it provides the right balance between quick & light, with enough heft to feel steady off-hand. Now, I just have to get busy so it'll feed the 45Colt as well as the C45S!

Scott, I've got that light mount on a couple of my rifles. They've come in handy a few times when I've had to check things out at night by the chicken coop or when the coyotes get too close to the house. Andy definitely came up with a winner there.

Slides in and out of a saddle scabbard with no scraping. A very thoughtful design that has no contact with the barrel.

7.2 gr of 231 is probably my favorite sixgun load under a 255 gr bullet.

Recoil is quite comfortable and almost indistinguishable from the Remington factory load.

So I thought I would try it in the carbine. These are with the Hornady swaged bullet.

This is with the Rim Rock RNFP. I definitely pulled the one to the right.
