Another 250th anniversary

Post by Ysabel Kid »

ON THIS DAY in 1775, the Patriots fought the British at the Battle of Bunker Hill near Boston, the first major battle of the war. Ordered not to fire on the advancing 2,000 British regulars "until you see the whites of their eyes," more than 3,200 Patriots took out half of the enemy soldiers before running out of ammunition and falling back. It was technically a British victory, but it invigorated and encouraged the Patriots.

Imagine that, the citizen soldiers ran out of ammo. And now many politicians want to limit the amount of ammo citizens can have. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Those politicians have learned from history... and believe that the citizenry of today lack to courage to defy their efforts. The question is, does today's citizenry remember their history.

Heard a story on NPR on the anniversary and they read a letter from a British officer and from a soldier patriot who were in the battle that day. The former was horrified at the British casualties — especially among the officers—and the patriot was optimistic that the greatest army in the world could be beaten.
