Help with Marlin 336
My friend, Marty, passed away earlier this year. He was a hardcore cowboy all his life living in bunkhouses on ranches all over WY and Montana when he wasn't driving a big rig wrecker. He was a bit cantankerous and usually got kicked out for fighting,(whiskey),and would have to live in his horse trailer with his dog for a bit! I only knew him a couple years but tried to help him in his last days.
He gifted me his Marlin before he died. He got it his 12th birthday. His horse rolled on him a few years ago and snapped the buttstock. He replace it with a cheap birch one. It was just a tool for him.
It had some rust but mostly just light surface rust. I took it to a gunsmith who has reblued all the parts. It's been a few months because he can't find a nice matching buttstock and the slimmer foregrip. He doesn't want to replace it with the beat up ones...neither do I.
Does anyone know where I can pick up a set for a fair price?

Won't be original but Boydes has Marlin stocks, replace both and they match.

There's always Precision Gun Works. they carry both Winchester & Marlin stock for nearly all models.

EBAY has several 336 stocks to choose from.

No reason I would find to change the forearm also. As mentioned they show up used on Ebay often, but you'll need to find one with some age to match the forearm on your 336. If you post the prefix letter ahead of the serial number, or if no prefix letter then the first two digits I can tell you when it was made.

Re: Help with Marlin 336
Thanks. I took it to the gunsmith when I got it so I don't have the ser # right now. The forearm is nice but beat up more than it looks. I may go by the gunsmith next week and I'll get the #. Thank you.marlinman93 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 14, 2024 11:08 am No reason I would find to change the forearm also. Nice to see an old gun get a new lease on life.
Especially one with a prior lifetime of use that probably has some good stories to go along with it.

Re: Help with Marlin 336
I finally got the Marlin back. It came out pretty good considering the shape it was in. Some of the pitting was worse than I thought. I think Marty would be happy. It's going to be a dedicated truck gun!. Here's an after pic. The first post shows how it was. I'll sight it in this weekend. I love having no safety on it.

Turned out good. I like the darker stain.
I bet Marty would approve.

Luckily I can get up to 3 elk tags. I'm going to try and get a cow with it...or a real close bull!
Re: Help with Marlin 336
Thanks for the ebay advise. I got a nice stock for a great price.

Re: Help with Marlin 336
Wow, what a handsome Marlin. I'm sure your friend would be pleased with the care you have put into it and I hope it puts some elk venison in your freezer this fall. In .30-30?
Re: Help with Marlin 336
Yes...30-30. It was made in '72. Marty got it for his 12th birthday. He died at 60. I told him I'd restore it when he gave it to me. Here's a pic of him when he was cowboying out in Bondurant area of Wyoming. He's on the right.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Wed Jun 11, 2025 6:22 am Wow, what a handsome Marlin. Re: Help with Marlin 336
Marty also gifted me the scabbard and ammo pouch. It took a bit of leather conditioner! The ammo, Winchester Power Points, were also turning green. Cleaned it all up.I think I'll use that ammo for an elk hunt this year. I shot the rifle yesterday. Very accurate. I only shot at 50 yards but it shot around an inch with some other Power Points I had.
Thanks Marty.

Re: Help with Marlin 336
Wow. It just gets better.
I got my Marlin when I was a high school sophomore. Dad ordered it for me from Herter's just before the Gun Control Act of 1968 took effect. As I recall, the mailman delivered it to our door. It was a .30-30 and it was accurate like yours. The next year, 1969, is when I started handloading to feed that Marlin -- pretty sure it was the Sierra (still in California then) 150-grain flat point over a charge of IMR 3031.
