Pretty wood

I admit it I'm a sucker for pretty walnut. I've been known to drool some as well.
So we started a kitchen job this morning. It's all natural finish black walnut.
The cabinet company did I real nice job book matching doors and drawer faces but they didn't use the same veneers from doors to drawers, a Shame...
Anyhow this piece grabbed my eye

The top of this board has color, figure and I would beg borrow or steal to find stock blanks like this. Sad part is a portion is now buried behind another cabinet. Not to mention it's an inside corner never to be appreciated.

Every time I See Walnut like that I'm transported back to the local Gun Club in the 70's & 80's . A new Wingmaster Field Gun was around $225.00 and TB Trap guns weren't too much more. about every week some Shooter would order an 870 Trap or an 1100 . A small group usually gathered around for the unboxing and often you would hear "where do they get that Walnut ?" a lot of those stocks were beautiful. .

I used to shoot Remington 3200s for trap. One I had was a Competition Special model that had wood to die for! It had color, figure like no other factory gun. It was EXIBITION wood. When I was in gunsmith school we had a guy come do a summer class for competition shotguns, he was a 3200 guy and when I opened the case and he saw that gun he went for his wallet but had to settle for teaching me how to rebuild it!
Sometimes I'm sorry I sold that gun , after I got out of school I didn't shoot for many years so I sold them and got extra for that wood.

In '76 I was 22 and totally Nuts. I bought a 3200 skeet gun for $550.00. My Family was . That gun was for Me a machine and I shot it so much that targets looked like the lid of a Garbage can. I even did pretty well at international skeet with it. To be Young again with out a care.!

Beautiful walnut...and cabinets!

I'm also a sucker for nice wood of just about any variety, especially figured wood. I build guitars as a hobby, so I'm always on the lookout for nice pieces to use for guitar tops. I was also on a kick for some time looking for some nice walnut to use for gun grips, and I found this fairly large chunk of figured walnut that I plan to use some day...after my new workshop is completed:

Major drool factor there Frank!
I bought this blank in school, set me back $190 then. I sat on it for about 6 months trying to decide what to put it on. Ultimately it became a 77/22 stock.

Wow, that is gorgeous! I wish my wood blank was large enough for a rifle stock, but it isn't, so I'll have to "settle" for using it for a dozen or so pistol grips.

I don't think I ever paid much attention to the wood on any of the rifles I purchased (2 new) until early 1980 when I was shopping for a new hunting rifle for a fall hunt. I was waffling between either a Remington 700 ADL or a BDL when the sales clerk offered me a selection of BDLs they had in stock. The BDLs were nicer than the ADL, and one caught my eye. Not figured, but color and grain were nicer than the other 3. Then, abt 6 years later when my wife and I were over at a friend's (FFL) and ordering 4 of Shilohs for himself, me & 2 other friends, (she was along to make sure I didn't go overboard! Looking in the catalog they had pictures of the various grades of wood the offered. The X-fancy caught her eye and gave the go-ahead to do that. All four rifles were paid for in advance, so we got free shipping & maybe expedited ordering as long as we made no changes during the waiting period. When ours came up to production, they called and confirmed no changes. I asked if they'd delete the barrel dovetail and rear sight. No problem. Our wait time was just at a year total. When I built my custom mdl 94 Winchester, I got a "rifle" buttstock from Fajen. Again I opted for an extra fancy grade, but nothing to compare to those picture above!

The only one close is the XXX-fancy I got for my Trapper.

So yesterday afternoon the homeowner comes into the kitchen with a puzzled look. Leaves and comes back with the contract from cabinet company.
Yup the drawer fronts are WRONG! Supposed to be horizontal grain, not vertical!
It's not our problem, it's the cabinet company screw up.
