One of the things I would give customers for things like birthdays were functioning mini steam engines. When you deal with engineers, they can appreciate the intricacies of small scale versions of what they work on all day.

All of the machining and assembly of some of the components is usually already done. It's strictly a "bolt together" project. Some of these little steam engines actually do something. I've seen them with small generators, pumps, etc.
