454 Casull Rossi barrel taper
Well interestingly the gunsmith had a look at my gun to install for me a Rossi made pic rail, which I typically bubbarize my Rossis with. He said the taper from the reciever is different from normal R92's which tend to have more of a straight taper. The casull tapers suddenly near the reciever he said, which when trying to mount the 5" or so long rail leaves a void or gap between the middle of the rail and the barrel. I was surprised at this as the rail sits flush on my 44 mag R92's. I wondered if the reciever end of the barrel is maybe thicker for strength on the 454's ? I dont have the gun with me but Ive asked him to make some measurements for interests sake, maybe some of the owners here can comment as I didnt pay much attention to the guns dimensions when I got it. At this stage he is going to add some screws and bedding to get the rail to sit right.

.
NKJ here will know.
I had a gunsmith install a rail on a 12 gauge M-66 breakopen Ithaca shotgun, and they 'solved the problem' of the tapered barrel by simply bending the rail so it followed the S-shaped contour of the shotgun barrel where it tapered...
I kept wondering why the scope couldn't be made to aim at the slug's impact point, and then when I checked to see if I'd mounted it wrong, I saw that to get it to work I'd probably have to have rings of different heights, and not let the fact that the rings would be denting into the scope body bother me...
I wound up using a red-dot, which wasn't as critical to have mounted parallel to the bore to work.
It is possible that Rossi might make a rail just for the 454 Casull - I did order one a few years back from Rossi for their 'regular' 92's.
I suppose careful filing of a properly-drilled rail (perhaps a regular Rossi one) would enable contouring the rail to match the barrel, but it would be a tedious process - probably involving a grinder and lots of test-fitting like the dentist when they fit a tooth cap and have you 'tap' on the carbon-paper to see if it is a good fit yet.

Doc, yes the rail is rossis one with peep built into it. When it appeared not to sit well he tried another aftermarket rail which is pre drilled for the latest rossi's. Nope as well. Not sure if rossi does one just for the 454 profile. The gunsmith is pretty good, Im not, I can barely describe the work he does properly. If my eyes were any good I wouldnt bother with a rail at all.
Excited to get the gun back and try some loads at last. 20 years ago I was into big game rifles. Some medical issues put an end to that in my late 30's and I was out of shooting altogether for 5-6 years. Then I limped back into the sport with a 357 rossi, then a 44mag, and now the 454. I clambered back into shooting with little pistol calibre carbines, maybe I should send Rossi a thankyou letter
. I actually reneged on a bolt action 500SW a couple weeks back, wont be joining you in that club after all. 454 will be the big gun for me. A mans got to know his limitations.
