Hi-Lux Malcolm Scope on an Uberti Winchester 73'

Post by Bryan Austin »

As many may already know I use a Malcolm 6x scope on my 44-40 Uberti Winchester 73'. I have been shooting this out to 300 yards with great success with original ballistics. There are little instructions when using the scope so there is a huge learning curve. The MOA marks are basically useless unless the distance between your scope mounts are correct....mine are not...my typical luck!

Basically I decided to start all over and make note of the marks for my ranges. One thing I remember is that I had to add a small spacer to the plunger in order to get a 300 yard bullseye POA. Well, I lost it so I have to make another.

I had hoped to be able to print some dial decals, but the numbers would be too small to see. I will settle for a cheat sheet like the pros!

I have posted my progress (work in progress) over on the 44-40 website for those interested in the Malcolm scopes. https://www.44-40.org/targets/2025-targets

lol, thanks.

I just gathered my data and discovered that the MOA marks might not be too far off at all like I was told they would be. Each 1/4 MOA mark at 100 yards is close!

I was holding 3 3/4" high at 100 yards when this brought me down close to the bullseye. Another session or two and I should have 25 yards through 100 yards dialed in!

Oh yeah, it wasn't my intent to have to paralleling topics but I wanted to post this here as well.

Scope Dial Decals

I was able to make some decals for the dials. I HAVE NOT USED THEM YET. They are a bit small, but I do think I will be able to see them with these old eyes. The white arc should prevent me from turning the dial in the wrong direction when switching between the 25, 50 and 100 yard elevation shots. They did not slide slightly off center (lock nut is seen as well) but they will replaced when the 75, 200 and 300 yard marks are added. I think this will be fun. They will not be perfect, but will get me into scoring position without guessing.

Been making some headway with the scope settings. Takes lots of ammo to sight in this shotgun!!!
Got the decals updated to 200 yards, but got the numbers on upside down on the windage dial Duh! I might as well change the orientation on the elevation dial as well.

Standard sscope base spacing is 7.2" for 1/4" clicks, or 10.5 for 1/8" click adjustments. Anything else will work, but you need to learn what your spacing does for your rifle and mounts. I've never owned a Hi Lux Malcolm so not sure if their scope mount adheres to what all other target mounts do at the standard spacing.

I watched a friend shoot his 1873 clone with 30" barrel in .45 Colt and iron sights take on the 1000 yd. dinger and hit it! To say we were all shocked and tickled for him is an understatement. Luckily it was being video covered so we have it for posterity.

Yeap, for some reason the Winchester 73' spacing can't get any closer than 8.something inches. I have it wrote down somewhere. So far it is still close enough to get on paper...then fine tune from there. I am getting it all set....but do have some cheat sheets.
