From the wayback machine

Post by Bill in Oregon »

When I was a kid in the 1950s and '60s, Walt Disney on Sunday nights was hands-down my favorite show on our old 13-channel black-and-white GE TV with rabbit ears on top. I was in agony to finish my homework in time to see the whole show -- Dad's orders.
My favorites where probably the animal tales, and this one -- "Run, Appaloosa, Run" -- was a particular favorite for some reason. It has stuck with me all these years, and not the least of its charms is listening to the soothing voice of the immortal Rex Allen as he narrates the film. It was directed by Larry Lansburgh, who had met Walt Disney playing polo in the 1930s, and after a severe leg fracture while filming a horse stunt, Walt told him, Larry, we'll make you a director. And so it came to be. I was astounded to meet Larry in the 1980s when I was the editor of a small weekly newspaper in Eagle Point, Oregon, where he had retired with his wife Olive, who was on the school board and also was a respected judge at the annual AQHA show in OKC. I learned all this doing a profile of him for the paper. He patiently explained basic directing and camera angle principles and even let me hold his Oscar.
Even without knowing Larry in later years, this innocent film still makes the world seem a much, much better place. If you have kids or grandkids, pull up a chair and watch. (Or don't tell anyone and just watch it yourself and feel the years melt away. 8) )
