I know that this is not a lever gun question but a 410 question. I ask forgiveness in advance
Hi everybody.
My question is about powder substitution!
I have recipes for 410 buckshot loads that call for Lil Gun, HS6, H110 or Longshot, powders of which I have none. I do have Alliant 300MP powder! after reading that this is a good powder to extend hull life I bought that. On a powder burn chart of 175 powders 300MP is #70! the others are respectively Lil Gun #65, HS6 #43, H110 #66 and Longshot #54. Keeping everything else in the recipe the same: can I safely use 300MP instead? I realize that velocities will be lower, but am not concerned with that. I don't want to go out and buy another supply of powder. I have two 8# jugs of 300MP.
What is the opinion of anyone who has more experience in such loading substitutions ?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts Thanks
John

Gettin old ain't for sissies!
There just has to be dogs in heaven !
I load 410 but not with 300MP. I would go to the manufacturer for specific load data. I don't have my load books handy to look for any recipes at the moment.
Please post data if you find anything.
I use lilgun and 296 mostly. I have also used 20/28 for a slug load- another unobtanium powder!
Alliant powder’s reloading guide shows many loads with that powder , however none are buck shot loads , maybe if you match the shot charge weight it would work. Their info lists specific hulls , wads , primers, and hull lengths .Maybe give them a call. But it is on their site.
I do think it will work.
Looking at that data it's right there with the other powders as far as charge weight/ shot load/ velocities. I would say IF you can find it get some. I say IF because Alliant powders are not out there since COVID. I'm slowly going away from Alliant, sure I've got a few powders from them but since they more or less said they aren't selling to the public for the foreseeable future I've moved on to Hodgon. Of course finding suitable powders on the shelves is hit and miss too.
I think 300MP is slightly more dense than H110 and therefore takes up slightly less space ... aside from the differences in burn speed. So there's more than just burn speed to consider. Lil'Gun has even lower density and takes up more space than either.
