Shootists 40th Anniversary Levergun Makes Meat! -updated-
FROM HOOT:
Melodie and I were interested in an "eating pig" so we were looking for a nice, fat sow or castrated boar. There were a few in that group but they were hard to pick out as they were all huddled together. Not sure what tipped them off but they got up, en masse and departed to our left. It always amazes me how fast a hog can go from 'asleep' to 'gone' and this group was no different. Jeremy told us just to sight tight as they would probably circle off and then work their way back.
In about 10 minutes, that's exactly what started to happen. They came in singly and in pairs which gave us lots of time to pick one out. The one Melodie eventually shot ambled across towards the feeder but didn't present a good angle right away. It kept moving around other pigs and wasn't in the clear. It finally turned to the left and started away from the other pigs at almost a perfect broadside. Now, all this time Melodie was in a kind on kneeling/seated position and watching it through the peep. When it started moving off, Jeremy whispered, "He's alone. Now's a good time." and Melodie fired.
She hit him low in the chest with a 255gr. "Keith" style bullet launched from 8.5gr. of Unique. The hog humped up and started to pivot and run. Jeremy said, "Put another bullet in him!" The second one was just further forward of the first and a little higher, exiting through the off-side elbow. At that, he went down and stayed.

I anticipate that we will make a lot of meat with these guns.
That’s a great load for a SAA revolver and nowhere near what that Marlin will stand. But still goes right through a tough animal.

It's amazing what a non-magnum load with a decent bullet will do.

Excellent and a brute hog! I say often to some guys in south georgia, I sure wish we had hogs to hunt here! I've been trying take my M94 Carbine in woods, but everytime I get opportunity it's raining.

Lipsey's said that this is most likely the first kill with the Ruger-made Marlin .45 Colt. Pretty cool.
