... my father, Louis Powell, was born in Medford, Oregon. Eagle Scout, WWII combat veteran, professor of forestry, devout Christian -- "a fine guy" as he was fond of saying about others. Miss you Pop. I didn't deserve such a wonderful father.
That's him on the right with Medford High School classmates just after the war -- just some small town kids who participated honorably, dutifully in something huge. They didn't think they were heroes. I always will.
What a Great picture Bill. A truly American story. My Dad would have fit right in the picture. He like a lot of Young Men had a hard life during the depression ,dug ditches pick& shovel every day to survive. WW2 broke out and Dad said that Boot Camp was a country club. He Loved the Army, never saw so much food, during Boot and advanced training He gained 24 lbs of weight. from 159 to 184lb. He went overseas. Truly the Greatest Generation.
A lot to be proud of Bill!
One of Dad's uncles was a submariner in the early days, I know he saw action but he was kind of a black sheep and I don't know much about him.
My Dad served 50-52 in the Navy. Spent his hitch at Alameda NAS playing pinochle, golf and softball. I have a picture of the team on Alcatraz when they played the inmates.
An uncle was in Nam, Army corps of engineering. He was in the thick of it including all the herbicide and has the health problems to prove it.
All those that served, wether combat or not deserve all the respect in the world!
