30-30 Trail Boss SUBS

Post by 348win »

Anybody shooting jacketed subsonics in 30-30 w TB powder.

I know we are downloading down past even 300blk energies
300blk is 1:7 for 220gr

30-30 is 1:10 so more like 190gr

But for no ears plinking and practice it would be cool. Probly double as a rabbit and grouse load.

30-30 is a big step up in case capacity from the Blackout so most likely nothing in common to compare as a source.

I've won several bottles of TB and have given them all back. It's not a powder I find useful. But... that said, I've read about it's use and the often suggested method of finding a starting load is to mark you case where the base of the bullet will sit, fill the case to that point, weigh it, multiply the result by 0.7, and that's your starting load. I've heard it's recommended not to compress it, or use less than minimum loads. Maybe someone has better into than I... or has at least experimented a little with it.

The only reduced load with jacketed I run is the Speer 100gr Plinker with Unique. The heaviest bullet is the 170FP from Bear Creek, also with Unique. I've never clocked either of them but the Plinker is still going fast enough to hear the bullet snap, not real loud but it's there.

The GMDR site has a lot of reduced data although it's pretty much all cast.

Samsi , that site doesn’t mention the use of a filler , I assume those loads didn’t use any ?

Not to my knowledge, if you read his Levergun Performance Studies you'll see that his goal with powder selection is uniform "flash ignition" (vs irregular continuous ignition - detonation).

Hodgdon data has loads for 160 & 175. Open rifle data click on TB then 30-30.
