I was thinking about buying another pistol…

Post by AJMD429 »

.
I was musing about how I’d never had a Browning HiPower or CZ75 and how the Canik pistols look good…then my son reminded me “Dad, you already HAVE a bunch of handguns; some you hardly ever shoot; you should spend that ‘gun money’ on more ammo and practice with whichever one is your favorite. Then you should probably sell most of the others, and buy even more ammo and practice until you’re as good a shot as me...”

I really HATE it when he’s right…

Its your money. You earned every penny. Use it as you wish. If he says anything further, just tell him how much you enjoy spending his inheritance.

The kid is probably right. I would do the same, but the darned USMC sniper course put both way out of my league. Actually, these days the youngest is on a reloading spree, so I don't have to do much.

I guess we all hope our kids will learn from our mistakes; I often get 'just enough' to buy that 'next' gun on my list, and 'just enough' to put a halfway decent scope on it or whatever. But then it isn't the 'perfect' one, by the time I've put a hundred rounds downrange, I'm already thinking about the next gun that is on my wish-list. On the other hand, my son waits, tries a few borrowed guns (sometimes mine), and then after careful consideration, saves up enough to get the best of whatever he's looking to get, and tries it out. At that point he may like it, or not - if he doesn't, he'll sell or trade it with zero sentimentality, then he will get whatever is better. He did the same with bows a few years back.

Now if I had more sense (and time) I'd "thin the herd" some, and use the proceeds to get a few more of the best-of-the-best on my wish-list, or top of some more of my rifles with really good scopes.

But yeah, even though spending $900 on a case or so of ammo (or reloading components) isn't near as much 'fun' as getting a new gun, but in terms of the end-satisfaction of becoming a competent shot with a firearm, it is far more sensible.

Me, I always figure a new gun every year is a whole lot cheaper than a new woman every year. :D

The struggle is real.
I'm bad like that with handguns. I can justify another handgun like taking a breath. The LAST thing I need is another handgun, and especially a .357, but I want one of the new 3" Colt Vipers for a EDC revolver.
I need help.

By the way, my oldest boy has an old FN Hi Power. I shot it a few years ago having never shot a Hi Power before. I really liked it. It was a great shooting pistol.

isn't there a law against instigating ad hoc gun purchases?
this kind of post sets me to trolling the internet for the ones
i don't own.

AND isn't the barf-atf-barf [Hello, DOGE?] persecuting people who are selling
their guns?

what's the work-around for that?

oh well, another day trolling the gun_nets keeps me out of yard work . ..

Yes

I can’t stay away from arms list even bough I have zero ‘need” for another gun

I do have a perceived need for better optics for the ones I have, more silencers and more ammo though

An acquaintance once opined that handguns to men are like jewelry to women, and I kind of see the parallel. That said, I wouldn't talk anyone out of buying a CZ75 or Hi Power. I have both and although they're not primary carry guns or even have a specific purpose for me I enjoy using them.

I think the Hi Power looks good, but can't find one in 45 Auto . . .

There's some hard won wisdom right there. As addictions go, it's an AWFUL lot cheaper than heroin, booze, or women.

Another reason I don't have kids! :D

I've had about a dozen Hi Powers over the years. Every one of them were 100% and good shooters. Especially the Canadian Inglis pistols. I sold off the entire collection while building the last house. Dumb thing to do, I know.

The only one I have now is one of the Springfield SA-35. It's another great shooter and probably the most accurate of the lot.

Happy to hear I'm not the only one! Y2K is an excellent shot. Of course he doesn't mind me picking up any new guns. He knows he'll get them someday!

I got Springfield Armory's SA-35 version of the High Power last year. I love it.
