When I was a kid, on one of our many road trips my Dad bought a postcard which he kept for many years. It said: The sun has riz

And here we is
In Texas yet!
Across Texas, Beaumont to El Paso is 909 miles.
From El Paso to San Diego (across New Mexico, Arizona and California) is only 792 miles.
If you make the drive across Texas, plan on taking your time, getting off the Interstate Highway and see some of the historic places along the way. It is a much more interesting trip than those long straight boring stretches.
And I would not limit it to Texas. Make that part of your travels where ever you go. We have done it some (not every time) in many of the Western States, in Great Britain and in Africa. It's worth it.
We did the short route through Texas almost 2 years ago. Headed to my brother's home in Noble, Ok. and decided to see Route 66, so we took it through the panhandle.
yep, back about 1994, my ex and I drove from Mobile, AL to Hemet, CA, then up to outside of Sacramento. After visiting my two sisters (who still live in CA, though I don't know why) we drove the interstate from Sacramento, through
Donner Pass, to Reno, was in mid may, and it was snowing as we went thru the pass, and I was only allowed to go thru cause I had a 4x4 truck. We left Reno and I wanted to go the old road instead of the interstate
accross Nevada in to Colorado. Was a two lane, and driving accross Nevada, we come over a rise in the road, and was about 30 cars parked on both sides of the road. Next thing we new a herd of mustangs ran accross the road and
went out thru the countryside. That is something you don't see driving the interstate!!
We also saw some old abandoned mines and stuff like that, was AWESOME
Good points. the secondaries in Texas are some of the best highways in the nation. I try to drive on different ones every trip and there are still thousands of miles of Texas left to see. Next trip i'm going to add a day to get some new views on the way. The Eisenhower highways are in bad condition and past overcrowded. I-40 is a national disgrace . . .
Last time I drove across Texas, from east to west, the I-10 was completed yet. We spent four days crossing the state. Although we did hit most of the high spots in southern Texas on that trip. Had to see the Alamo and of course Rosa's Cantina. But there were so many other places we visited and others we just didn't get to. Newly discharged and with a 1972 351 Cleveland powered Gran Torino it was a great trip. That car was made for the open road.
