Browning 53 FRONT SIGHT AFFIXED

Post by 348win »

Any of ya's ever have a Browning 53 Front Sight Removed???

Me thinks there's a screw under the sight insert
(insert dovetailed into the base which screws onto barrel???)

Ain't gonna pound one out just to learn if the screw is there......

I would expect it to be silver brazed to barrel.

Is there through slot they are brazing "out of sight"

I cant see it being brazed down the sides.

I looked at Gunpartscorp, they don't listen the Browning 53.
I'd give Browning a call tomorrow I'm sure someone there can answer your question.

Typically ramps were silver brazed when it's in the white.
The braze is usually hidden under the sight .

Early on pre war Winchesters the ramp was part of the barrel forging. But later it changed to silver braze. One would assume Browning used the later method.

Browning responded no info archived because that rifle was NOT made by Browning/Winchester

I'm not surprised

That's hogwash from Browning, either they don't know who to ask or too lazy.
Ok so Miroku made them, look for an email address for them. Of course you might need a Japanese translator!
Most likely silver solder...

A friend had a Browning (Miroku) Model 53 in .32-20. The front sight on his gun was mounted in a standard dovetail. I'm a little confused about the "brazed" comments. Maybe Browning made more than one style of Model 53?

The base is silver brazed to barrel , the dovetail cut is in the base.

Interestingly enough the Model 65 and 71 use a visible screw beginning of the ramp

The 65 in 218 from Miroku certainly has more meat to drill and tap into.

The Miroku 71 might also....
But it aint too much different than the 53 as far as wall thickness goes.

Interesting observations.

Wow! Somehow I completely missed that the OP was asking how the sight BASE was affixed to the barrel. Sorry!

Thanks for the photo Pat C !
