How many of you keep records of the amount of times you shoot a particular gun?

I remember that Terry Murbach kept meticulous records and I know varmint hunters who keep track of every round.

I’ve never done this but I think I know why.

I was shooting a brand new Colt SAA today just to see where the sights were compared to the group. I had mixed results. See below. But I think it’s because I almost never get new guns and I don’t have a clue how many times they were fired before I got them.

Do you keep detailed records?

Not being a sufferer of OCD I have never been interested in counting rounds fired. I do know one particular firearm that I had fired once to sight in and part of one 28 round magazine, so probably less that fifty rounds. A bit later I almost threw at the guy in the armory with a few choice words. That's the closest I can come to knowing how many rounds through a firearm.

I also kept record of the game I shot, the gun and load, the distance, the reaction of the animal, the time of day and autopsy report of bullet track. I quit doing that more than 20 years ago.

The only thing I kind of kept track of was 12ga back when I was competing a lot. Would average a thousand rounds a week.

That’s a valid point.

Not me . Closest I get is marking loaded boxes as to how many times they have been loaded and not partial loading any box . Shoot them all and then load them all, no partials.

I do when I go shoot on the MOD (military) ranges, part of their credo is to know about every round and every gun fired, I believe it's a holdover from times past when soldiers would keep back ammo though I don't know. I also know that some of the civilians I shoot with have their licences conditional on shooting on bona fide registered ranges and that's one way of keeping track.
I don't do it in the field.
My data tells me my favorite gun is my 94 win, 2nd my #3 Ruger, 3rd my 357 carbine 4th my savage mod 1899 and then my browning BLR 81.

I've kept a record of game also, distance and rifle used...location, any unusual occurrance, hunting partner...I do it to remember the good times.
Up to 29 elk in 33 seasons and about 6 antelope. Never hunted deer! Most used caliber is 30-06. Then 45-70. As far as shots fired on a rifle, I did on one rifle for work but not any of mine.

I was interested in how it averaged out. Over 10 years or so the average distance I shot big game was around 70 yards if I remember correctly. The majority were taken before 10 AM. And the majority needed no follow-up shots.

Nope... I'm with OldWin... I seldom even calculate what my fuel mileage is on my personal cars or trucks... Oil changes & lube jobs are done once a year... needed or not. Sometimes, after driving in a hard rain, I'll relube it between scheduled lube jobs. My 4WD dually has just over 101K & 25 years old, that's and average of 4,000+ miles between services. The C10 is 27 years old, has ~81K, so has averaged a 3,000 mile service interval. However, for the Rose, I can tell you every oil change, fuel up and mileage since I bought it. It has 2,886,xxx miles, and had its 192nd oil change 6,000 miles ago. Every repair, major or minor has been recorded. But, since that's WORK related, I don't mind the record-keeping... for fun stuff... it would cease making it fun!

I do not. I could probably figure it out for my 30-30 as I keep a record of how many times my lots of brass have been fired. Ain't got a clue for most others.

I had a rough guess of 7,000 rounds on my 45 1911 before I sold it.

My 22's, it'd be mighty hard to track. My cousin and I put a 500 round brick through a 22/45 once to break it in and test it after it came back from Ruger. Back when a brick was $10. Only 22 I have currently is the Single Six, and I haven't a clue there either.

Mine average about 90 yards for elk and almost all were around 7am or 7pm give or take 30 min. Antelope...about 350 yards within a couple hours of whenever I arrived. They are so fun to hunt. Way less hiking...and a UTV makes it easy!

The One gun in particular I track, you already know about. I keep track of How many Bricks of rimfire I put through a k-22, SP101, & Taurus Tracker. Since I reload for everything and know how much brass I have for each caliber, I track the total ammo used more than how much in each individual firearm.

I also used to, and also kept track of how many times brass was reloaded. I stopped all of that when I just didn't find a reason to justify tracking shots fired through guns, and never lost any brass often enough to consider that worthwhile either.

I’m tempted to start keeping records on this Colt and the Marlin Trapper.
