BIG HORN ARMORY

Post by 348win »

Anybody got a BHA rifle on hand??

Is the action shorter than a M71 or 1886......?

I got to wonder if they shortened it up to go along w the shorter pistol length cartridges, or if your lugging "the same weight" rifle around.

Wait for Doc to see this, he has one.
I thought I read that BHA figured out what was needed and they settled on something between.

I'd like one in 460.

I thought the BHA was shorter. If you look at where the spring cover starts on the BHA guns, it appears well to the rear of where it would on an 1886/71. As if they pulled about a 1/2" out of the action. The rear looks pulled forward by about 1/2" toward the front of the receiver.

I think the whole point of the BHA was that it was and action sized between a 1892 and an 1886. Capable of handling the modern higher pressure pistol rounds.

This is a 71 ...

I told a lie. I went and measured them and the BH is smaller than 71. Width 71 is 1.23, BH is 1.13
Front of receiver to back of bolt, BH 5.22, 71 is 5.74

It looks like, maybe the question has been answered, but I could measure mine, if need be.

As others have said, I think the actual designation of 89 refers to the fact that they came up with an action in between the length of the 86 and the 92.

My BHA 89 is the eight shot carbine 'blued' (nitrided stainless) version and is slightly shorter than my 1894 Marlin 44 mag. Heft seems about the same as a Marlin Guide Gun.

My friend has a BigHorn in 500 S&W and a Winchester 1886 in 50-110. The BH is smaller in the receiver, more trim, with a shorter throw. It feels more like a 92 to me than an 86.

Good stuff guys

Thanks!

I'd like to handle one in person, but doubt I will bump into one. Pricey to keep on shelf, and low production?

I don't recall ever seeing a dealer in the Northeast.

They are almost a 'custom-order' gun, but I'm glad I have one. Like I said in another post, having a fewer number of really high-quality (but still practical and useful) guns, versus a bathtub full of 'ok' guns, is the path I wish I'd taken. In the end, even though the individual guns might cost three or four times as much as what I'm used to spending, I'd probably spend less TOTAL on firearms had I chosen that path, and I'd have far more unique firearms in my collection versus mostly having the same stuff everyone else has.

My son has gone that route, and although he has 3-4 'sentimental' guns he will probably never sell, he's turned over a ton of 'ok' leverguns, bolt-actions, and semi-autos, with the evolution towards only having 'premium' rifles in each category. Bolt actions for 1/2-MOA shooting at 500 yards plus, Semiautos for protective services, and leverguns for medium-range hunting. Having said that, we have some of the most fun times with his Henry 22 LR levergun and his Ruger Mark-2 22 LR.

The Big Horn Armory is a beefed up 1892 frame , Not a large frame like 1886.

They added just a little metal around the ring and redesigned the spring cover hence the name model 89 half way between 1886 and 1892

True, but a loading gate does not necessarily a levergun make! lol, it came to be quickly.

348 Win, I don't think you are likely to run into one unless you know someone who has one. I've seen a couple for sale in Cody, but I believe they were being sold by the party who ordered them and bought them, second hand sales, not directly from Big Horn. I've been to where they are made a couple of times several years ago, but I don't even think they had any for display there, just what orders they were working on.

I did shoot a prototype---guess you could call it that, when I had a friend who was working there and I've shot a couple that friends have and I would say they remind me more of a 92 than an 86.
